Manteca tops Oakdale for coach Reis’ 40th win

10 years ago: October 21, 2006 – On his 17th birthday Friday, just two days after he was crowned the school's Homecoming King, Andre Patterson and his Manteca High football team defeated Oakdale High 17-7 at Guss Schmiedt Field. Patterson ended up with 94 yards rushing. Ruben Cedano passed for a 73-yard TD to Adam Crawford and to Michael Barber for a 26-yard score. Adrian Fuentes kicked a 23-yard field goal. Cedano completed 9-of-18 passing for 247 yards and the two touchdowns. it was the 40th win for fifth- year coach Eric Reis.

1966: EU sophs win 1st MHS-EU football game

Fifty years ago, on October 12, 1966, Palo Alto's Cubberly High downed winless Manteca High 26-7 here last Friday night. The Buffaloes' only score of the evening came on a Phil Brown to Andy Munoz pass that covered 37 yards. Steve Harmon added the extra point.

2006: Buffs soccer stay in VOL race lead

10 years ago: October 11, 2006 – The Manteca High soccer team kept its lofty perch atop the Valley Oak League standings with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Weston Ranch High in Stockton Tuesday. Senior Jorge Belmonte netted the only score of the night in the first few minutes of play.

1986: Buffs tops Franklin 26-0

Sixty years ago, on September 13, 1956, the ranks are beginning to thin as the Manteca High Buffaloes enter their final week of practices before meeting Turlock High in the season's opener on Friday of next week. Head coach Frank LaSan feels that the line is slightly ahead of the backs in their development but, by game time, the Buffs should be at full strength. 2006: EU High dedicates Jim Brown Fitness Center

Fifty years ago, on August 26, 1966, the first squad of prospects for East Union High will begin conditioning drills Monday evening in preparation for their first season of football. East Union's campus is not completed yet and for the present, students will be housed on the Manteca High campus. They will have soph and frosh-soph football teams this fall for the initial year. 1996: EU has its own stadium

20 years ago: August 19, 1996 – The local high school football programs are preparing for a new, but different season. Sierra High will be playing with their first senior class and East Union will be playing in their own stadium for the first season in the history of the school. All three Manteca high schools began conditioning Monday. At Manteca High, Coach Joe Miller has a group of 39 experienced down linemen out: Trinidad Diaz, Calvin Ryans, Anthony Pacheco and Richie Guillermo are expected to lead at the point of attack.

1996: EU grad kicking for NFL’s Bills

80 years ago, on July 24, 1936, winning its first game in three starts, the Manteca Canaries softball team trounced the Lodi Air Kings 12-2. The local songbirds had a barrage of 16 hits to annex the tilt. Pitcher Uldric Hussey pitched four innings, Charley Percival tossed two more and Benny Hooper pitched the final inning without trouble. Percival and Ernie Theiler each had three singles, while Percival added a home run to his total.

IOC leaders stop short of complete ban on Russians

Eighty years ago, on July 16, 1936, 10 hard-fought innings of softball could not decide the issue when the Canary Birds tangled with the Stockton Fraser Furnace team in the main attraction at Recreation Park. With the score standing at 7-all, the game was called to allow the local players time to get to work. Joe Bianchi paced the local hitters, poling a trio of safeties in six attempts.

1986: Babe Ruth 16-18’s head to state

Eighty years ago, on July 16, 1936, Otto L. Steele, Frank Candini, James Castro and Clyde Wilson motored to Oakland and while there called on Milo Candini, who is pitching for the Chapel of the Oaks baseball club, which is sponsored by the New York Yankees. Many local baseball fans are strong in their belief that the Manteca boy is destined soon to be seen in the uniform of a major league club.

1976: Breitenbucher is a triple winner

Forty years ago, on July 8, 1976, The Manteca Dolphins competitive swim team remained undefeated Monday as they edged last year's Tri-County Swim Conference champions, Ripon, 314.5-297.5. Triple winners for the Dolphins were Desiree Dowell (girls 11-12), Dave Breitenbucher (boy s 13-14) and Jill Pinto (girls 15-17).

1986: Buffs’ Woods just misses perfect game

Eighty years ago, on April 24, 1936, playing one of its hardest games of the season, Coach Maurice Tracie's Manteca High baseball team defeated Patterson High by a 3 to 1 score in Patterson. Milo Candini struck out 22 men and walked four in the nine-inning game, while pitching a three-hitter. Wallace Fagundes led the Buffalo hitting with two for three. Candini knocked a three-base hit, which was the best of the game.

Sierra girls soccer: 6th best in nation

10 years ago: April 19, 2006: Coach Manuel Pires and his Sierra High soccer team have been dubbed the sixth-best high school girls soccer program in the nation, according to the latest rankings by Adidas and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The Timberwolves (18-0-2) are also the top-ranked team in Region VI, an area that spans the entire West Coast.

1996: Sierra tops Oakdale for first ever softball win

Thirty years ago, on March 31, 1986, East Union High junior Frank Gonzales opened the game with a home run and then went back out on the mound and scattered six hits over 5.1 innings as the Lancers beat Los Banos High 10-4 on the EU diamond. It was the second straight year that Gonzales, an all-league player last year, led off the Los Banos game with a home run. Jon Skaggs and Mike Gase each had a pair of hits to spark the 11-hit EU attack.

2006: Sarah Corbett has four wins in Sierra track victory

Forty years ago, on March 24, 1976, in a game more noted for its lack of artistic merit than for its fine play, Manteca High prevailed over East Union High 3-2 on the Buffalo campus. A pair of passed balls accounted for the two Lancer runs, while two costly errors aided the Buffs as they racked up their three counters. The EU hurler, Bill Poindexter, kept the MHS nine off balance with a variety of off-speed pitches and limited the winners to four hits, while his mates got seven off Dale Delmanowski and Darrell Womack.
