2001: Moore’s 3-pointer wins SHS playoff game

10 years ago: February 24, 2001 - East Union High senior Sergio Lopez wrestled his way into the semi-finals of the Sac-Joaquin Section tournament on Friday, being the only local prep wrestler to advance. Lopez, at the 127-pound weight class, won both of his matches on 6-1 and 5-1 decisions. He will face an opponent from Golden Sierra High on Saturday.

1981: Buff cagers net 25th straight VOL win

Eighty years ago, on January 16, 1931, Manteca High now leads the C.I.F. league as a result of a victory taken from the Ceres High Bulldogs on the Manteca court. The Bulldogs were trounced to the score of 31 to 13. The Buffaloes piled up a 10-point lead before the Bulldogs could get going. This lead was never overtaken, although the score at the half was 13 to 10. Enrico Bianchi was the high scorer for Manteca with 10 points.

1981: Brown named new East Union football coach

Thirty years ago, on January 15, 1981, speculation about who would become the new varsity football coach at East Union High School ended when the Manteca Unified School District approved the appointment of Jim C. Brown. The 42 year-old Brown, a long-time assistant coach under Walker Vick at Manteca High, will succeed Vern Gebhardt, who resigned last November.

1971: Teicheira all-conference at Oregon Tech

Forty years ago, on January 8, 1971, Frank Teicheira of Manteca, playing football for Oregon Technical Institute, was honored by being named an all-Evergreen Conference fullback. The 5-7, 195-pound player was also selected as a member of the 12-school district team. The Owls honored him by selecting him most valuable player and as most outstanding back. Last year, Teicheira was named as an all-conference linebacker.

10 years ago: December 2, 2000 - There were mixed results for local high school soccer teams at the Beyer Tournament in Modesto on Friday. East Union High topped the field with a 10-0 stomping of Ceres High. Lady Lancers Amber Stone and Amanda Harris led the winning effort with two goals each, Claudia Guzman got an unassisted goal, Courtney Williams, Hopkins, Julia Santos and Jenny Leonard all netted one. 1980: EU grid coach Gebhardt resigns after losing season

Thirty years ago, on November 24, 1980, in keeping with his promise to the boosters' club to resign if "we don't have a successful season," East Union High football coach Vern Gebhardt tendered his resignation to school principal Richard Durham.
