1937: Frank Teicheira plays 2 football games in same night

Ninety years ago, on October 21, 1927, the Manteca High football eleven defeated the "Flying Brownies" of Oakdale High at Oakdale by a score of 7 to 0. The game was one of the best played and most exciting ever played on the Oakdale field. The Oakdale line held Captain Eddie Forsell and his cohorts Bianchi, Cosgriff and Theiler, to very little yardage at a time. The only score of the game was in the second quarter when Forsell tossed a long forward pass to Byron Gubbins that went for about 35 yards and a touchdown. Emil Theiler converted for ...

1997: Hardcastle leads EU High to upset grid win

Ninety years ago, on September 4, 1927, the game between the Manteca Maulers and the Gustine Athletics could be called the "Comedy of Errors". Just at a time when the Maulers needed to play real ball, error after error was made, totaling 10 in all before the contest was ended. When the game ended, the score stood 20 to 5 in favor of the visitors, which was more a Stockton team than Gustine. It was said that only three of the regular Gustine players were in the lineup, the rest being recruited from various other teams throughout central California.

"We're ready and set to go." Brown is eager to improve on last year's dismal 2-8 campaign.

1987: Scott Brooks to try out with Detroit Pistons

Thirty years ago, on August 16, 1987, landing a tryout from a NBA team was exactly what Scott Brooks wanted, but when the team turned out to be the Detroit Pistons doing asking, he had to admit he was a little awestruck. "I was surprised the team offered me one," said Brooks, who left the Los Angeles Pro Summer League as the free agent's Most Valuable Player. The Lathrop lad who starred at East Union High before becoming a hit at Delta Junior College and UC Irvine, averaged 16 points, four assists and four steals per game in no ...

1987: Wohle sets three swim records

Ninety years ago, on July 24, 1927, there were many strange faces in the Gustine lineup and, from comments heard, it looked more like a Central League team, but at that the Manteca boys waded right through and won a brilliant victory, 12 to 5. The battery work of "Fat" Flores and Benny Hooper was exceptionally good. That, combined with the hitting of Emil Theiler, Joe Codiga, Dusty Miller and Hooper, and the fielding of Louis Bianchi in center, featured the contest. Theiler and Codiga got four hits each. The umpiring of Azevedo gave general satisfaction, it was said.

Ninety years ago, on July 18, 1927, the Manteca Maulers baseball team hopped on the veteran Jack Gilligan of the Modesto Merchants early in Sunday's Don Pedro League game and, coupled with some very loose playing by the Merchants, easily trounced them 12 to 1. Benny Hooper, crack Mauler catcher, retired from the game in the seventh inning with a badly swollen hand. Hooper came through with a single and ...
