1977: EU upsets Sonora in basketball

Forty years ago, on February 15, 1977, East Union High pulled the upset of the Valley Oak League basketball campaign, stunning Sonora High at the Wildcats' gym 82-78. Russell Stewart, a 6-2 senior who will complete his first and only year of high school basketball, kept the scoreboard lights blinking with an amazing 39 points. The total is a Lancer individual scoring record and is also an individual high this season in league play. Tim Tucker added 18 to the winning total, while Kelly DeGeest had 12 and Bruce Corbett 10 counters.

1997: 11 straight wins for Sierra High soccer

Forty years ago, on January 24, 1977, successfully picking up the pace in the third period with a combination of better shooting, improved rebounding and more intense pressure with its press, Manteca High rode unimpeded in the second half en route to a 75-51 win over cross-town East Union High. 1947: Curtis Patterson leads Manteca High basketball win

Ninety years ago, on January 15, 1927, in the most exciting game ever played at the Eye Street Auditorium at Modesto High, the Manteca High basketball team defeated Modesto High. The score was 18 to 14. This makes five straight victories for Manteca and the second straight CIF win. Eddie Forsell scored six points for Manteca.

2006: Scharmann scores 40 in first Sierra basketball win

Thirty years ago, on December 12, 1986, Tevani Scott, the former Manteca High sensation, was named to the NCAA's Division II All-American volleyball squad at a banquet held in Sacramento. The honor capped a glorious career for the 5-foot-10 Scott, who helped lead Sacramento State to a 27-8 record this season.

1956: Paul Wiggin chosen as All-American

Sixty years ago, on December 13, 1956, Stanford University tackle Paul Wiggin of Lathrop, a Manteca High graduate, has finished his college football career with a string of post-season honors. Wiggin, who was selected as an All-American in his junior year, was also chosen by Sporting News as an All-American this season. He was also All-Coast and was selected by his teammates as Stanford's outstanding player.

2006: Buffs win section football title

Thirty years ago, on December 2, 1986, Manteca High's Kevin Wentworth was named the Outstanding Offensive Player in the Valley Oak League for football and East Union High's Dimitri Koger shared the conference's Outstanding Defensive Player honor with Wentworth, it was announced by the coaches. 2006: Gowan, Founts lead East Union in hoop season opener

Forty years ago, on November 15, 1976, Manteca High scored twice in the final eight minute s to stop East Union High 31-22 before an overflow crowd of 6,100 at Guss Schmiedt Field. The Buffaloes finished the season at 7-3, while the Lancers end the season at 6-4. 10 years ago: November 15, 2006 – Sierra High co-head soccer coaches Jose Montes and Joe Pires were named Co-coaches of the Year after leading the Timberwolves (15-4-3) to their first Valley Oak League championship since 1999. Sierra's Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV playoff run ended in a championship match Saturday at Lincoln High in Stockton, where Lincoln High of Placer County defeated the T'wolves 1-0 in overtime. Manteca tops Oakdale for coach Reis’ 40th win

10 years ago: October 21, 2006 – On his 17th birthday Friday, just two days after he was crowned the school's Homecoming King, Andre Patterson and his Manteca High football team defeated Oakdale High 17-7 at Guss Schmiedt Field. Patterson ended up with 94 yards rushing. Ruben Cedano passed for a 73-yard TD to Adam Crawford and to Michael Barber for a 26-yard score. Adrian Fuentes kicked a 23-yard field goal. Cedano completed 9-of-18 passing for 247 yards and the two touchdowns. it was the 40th win for fifth- year coach Eric Reis.

Fifty years ago, on October 12, 1966, Palo Alto's Cubberly High downed winless Manteca High 26-7 here last Friday night. The Buffaloes' only score of the evening came on a Phil Brown to Andy Munoz pass that covered 37 yards. Steve Harmon added the extra point.

2006: EU High dedicates Jim Brown Fitness Center

Fifty years ago, on August 26, 1966, the first squad of prospects for East Union High will begin conditioning drills Monday evening in preparation for their first season of football. East Union's campus is not completed yet and for the present, students will be housed on the Manteca High campus. They will have soph and frosh-soph football teams this fall for the initial year. 1996: EU has its own stadium

20 years ago: August 19, 1996 – The local high school football programs are preparing for a new, but different season. Sierra High will be playing with their first senior class and East Union will be playing in their own stadium for the first season in the history of the school. All three Manteca high schools began conditioning Monday. At Manteca High, Coach Joe Miller has a group of 39 experienced down linemen out: Trinidad Diaz, Calvin Ryans, Anthony Pacheco and Richie Guillermo are expected to lead at the point of attack.

1996: EU grad kicking for NFL’s Bills

80 years ago, on July 24, 1936, winning its first game in three starts, the Manteca Canaries softball team trounced the Lodi Air Kings 12-2. The local songbirds had a barrage of 16 hits to annex the tilt. Pitcher Uldric Hussey pitched four innings, Charley Percival tossed two more and Benny Hooper pitched the final inning without trouble. Percival and Ernie Theiler each had three singles, while Percival added a home run to his total.
