1991:Simoni drives in 5 runs in EU win

20 years ago: April 2, 1991 - The Manteca High baseball team ended up victors in the first day of the Dick Windemuth Easter Tournament at Modesto's Downey High yesterday. The Buffaloes ended up the victors in a 7-6 see-saw affair against Davis High of Modesto. MHS rallied from a 6-4 deficit in their last at-bats. Paul Gutierrez delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single to tie the score. Gutierrez later scored the winning run on a single by Larry Maestas.

1951: Buffs drub Ceres High, 16-0

Sixty years ago, on March 27, 1951, the Manteca High baseball team broke out in a rash of extra-base hits to overwhelm Ceres High 16-0 on the local diamond. Along with the finest sample of hitting shown by the local nine this year was the fine pitching performance of Larry Brashear. Brashear gave up but four hits. Ray Dellavecchia pounded out two triples and a double and Charles Snyder also had three for three for the Buffaloes.

1961: Flames burn Buffs in baseball

Fifty years ago, on March 17, 1961, the Lodi High Flames showed why they are rated as the top prep baseball club in the area by taking a close 2-0 win from Manteca High in Lodi. Manteca's Tim Brumley turned in a good performance in limiting the hard-hitting Flames to four hits, but Lodi's Don Webster was also stingy and held the locals to only two hits. 10 years ago: March 24, 2001 - Strong pitching by both baseball teams kept the bases clear for much of the game as visiting Los Banos High edged Manteca High 1-0 on Friday. The Buffaloes cracked out six hits in the loss as Ryan Cardoza's two doubles were wasted.

1991: EU High baseball rolls over Edison, 11-0

20 years ago: March 9, 1991 - East Union High baseball coach Darrell Hardcastle used all 19 of his players en route to an 11-1 romp over visiting Edison High yesterday. The bench supplied six of the Lancers' 10 hits and scored five runs. Mike Costa pitched the first six innings, allowing just one run on seven hits to earn the win. Eric Simoni, Clint Colwell and Brian Bettencourt each had a pair of hits for EU. Simoni scored three times.

Seventy years ago, on March 14, 1941, Manteca's high school baseball squad will open its 1941 season here this afternoon when it tangles with the first squad that Escalon High has sent out in the last seven years to contest other teams. Coach Larry Siemering gives the probable players to start on his powerful nine as follows: catcher, Nick Baturin; pitcher, Lou Bronzan; first base, John Poulos; second base, "Murph" Theiler; shortstop, James Miniaci; third base, Jack Liebhart; left field, Fredrick Hubbard; center, Willard Rieger; and either Bob Bordenave or Orange in right field.

1991: EU tops All VOL boys hoop picks

20 years ago: March 5, 1991 - Manteca High held its annual winter social Monday night, awarding athletes in each sport with plaques of recognition. MHS Athletic Director Walker Vick presented the MHS/VOL Scholar Athlete awards to the Buffaloes who had maintained a grade point average of over 3.7 while participating in varsity athletics. Two-sport participants included Erin Lathrop (volleyball and basketball), Sue Nunes (tennis and basketball) and Peter Smith (football and wrestling). In baseball, James Harvey and Paul Gutierrez were named co-MVP's. In girls soccer, Jenna Asprey was named MVP; Vince Elliott received the award for wrestling ...

1991: Sierra falls short in section hoop title game

20 years ago: February 23, 1991 - The Manteca High baseball team exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh inning to win its season opener at Franklin High in Stockton 6-1 on Friday. The big hit was a bases-loaded double by Bobby Magnuson, which drove in three runs. He had another double to lead the Buffalo hitters. Coach Jack Thomson praised Buff starting pitcher Jared Murillo, who pitched four innings, struck out six and walked only one.

1931: Manteca High has best hoop season ever

Eighty years ago, on February 20, 1931, Manteca High School dropped a hotly-contested game to the Oakdale High cagers by the score of 19-17. This contest decided the San Joaquin-Stanislaus C.I.F. championship. Harold Reeves, veteran guard for the Buffaloes, proved a star by looping several difficult shots and outwitting the Mustangs. 2001: Moore’s 3-pointer wins SHS playoff game

10 years ago: February 24, 2001 - East Union High senior Sergio Lopez wrestled his way into the semi-finals of the Sac-Joaquin Section tournament on Friday, being the only local prep wrestler to advance. Lopez, at the 127-pound weight class, won both of his matches on 6-1 and 5-1 decisions. He will face an opponent from Golden Sierra High on Saturday.

Seventy years ago, on February 7, 1941, Manteca High hit the winning stride in the Manteca High School gym. The Buffaloes defeated Ceres High, who had previously overpowered the local quintet, the local varsity winning their game, 35 to 33 in an exicting overtime tussle. In the extra three minutes, "Sleepy" Poulos sank a nice field basket to put the game on ice 35 to 33. High-point man for the Buffalo squad, Ken Drury, had seven buckets for a total of 14 points and Glen Bale was next with 10 points.

20 years ago: January 26, 1991 - Underdog Manteca High stayed right with its highly-regarded neighbors from East Union High Friday night, but couldn't overcome seven three-pointers by the Lancers, finally going down 58-50 in a boys' basketball matchup at Winter Gym. EU stayed atop the VOL standings with a perfect 3-0 record to go with their overall mark of 18-3. 1974: Tubbs intercepts pass in Buff win

Fifty years ago, on September 18, 1964, rolling up an impressive 273 yards on the ground, Manteca High rolled to a convincing 31-18 win over Downey High of Modesto in the season opener for both clubs. Defensive back John Tubbs intercepted a first-quarter Downey pass and rambled unmolested for 57 yards to the end zone for the first Buffalo score. Sixty years ago, on September 16, 1954, Manteca High put on the final polishing touches to their offense as they readied themselves for their season football opener against Hayward High Saturday night at Pennebaker Field. Coach Pete Denevi is counting on back Monte Kinsley for a valuable few yards. He has shown well in practice and, with a year's experience under his belt, could develop into one of the league's best fullbacks. 1914: Locals claim extra- inning game on dusty field

One hundred years ago, on August 17, 1914, the Battery C team from Stockton, with "Gus" Brock as pitcher were lined up as opponents to the Merchants. Free watermelons, a gift from Mr. Powers, and though much appreciated, did not draw many to the game. The game went into the tenth inning, when the Merchants got the deciding run and won a hard-fought game by a 5 to 4 score.
