Fifty years ago, on April 18, 1961, Manteca High's swim team downed Ceres High in a dual meet held in Ceres. The final score was Manteca 58, Ceres 28. The Buffaloes were paced by Tom Honey, Jim Cunningham and Larry Hopkins. Honey took firsts in the 50 yard freestyle, individual medley and helped on the winning medley relay team. Cunningham took a first in the 200 yard freestyle and helped on the winning medley relay team. Hopkins took a first in the 100 yard backstroke and helped on the winning medley relay team.
20 years ago: April 13, 1991 - East Union High, using a seven-man, nine-hit attack, downed visiting Oakdale High 7-3 and claimed sole possession of first place in the VOL baseball race Friday afternoon. Combined with the four-hit pitching of Mike Costa and Brian Bettencourt, the Lancers improved to 4-1 in league play. Mark Kackley had two hits and drove in a pair of runs for EU.
Eighty years ago, on April 10, 1931, Manteca High twirler Bob Silva, allowing only four hits, easily defeated the Hilmar High nine, the score being 13 to 3. Silva fanned four men and walked five and was given good support in the field. Outstanding Buffalo players were Lisle Percival, who hit four for six, Charlie Percival, who got three for four and Ray Forsell, who connected three for five.
20 years ago: April 6, 1991 - Manteca High has had an impact on this year's baseball program at San Joaquin Delta College. Looking straight up the middle at last week's game against Chabot College, we saw catcher Ken Huckaby, on the mound was Eric Hill and patrolling center field was Oscar Castellanos. Huckaby has been offered a full-ride scholarship to the University of Texas for his junior year.
Sixty years ago, on April 6, 1951, Manteca High's up and coming baseball nine came through with a 6-0 whitewashing over Livingston High. Highlight of the game was the no-hit performance of the Buffalo hurlers. Three local hurlers combined to turn in a no-hitter. Johnny Cabrera opened on the mound for the Buffs, but was relieved in the second when he appeared to have trouble finding the plate. Henry Braghetta chucked until the fifth inning and little Al Limas came in to finish the game. Bob Turk, with two for three, was the leading hitter for the locals.
20 years ago: April 2, 1991 - The Manteca High baseball team ended up victors in the first day of the Dick Windemuth Easter Tournament at Modesto's Downey High yesterday. The Buffaloes ended up the victors in a 7-6 see-saw affair against Davis High of Modesto. MHS rallied from a 6-4 deficit in their last at-bats. Paul Gutierrez delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single to tie the score. Gutierrez later scored the winning run on a single by Larry Maestas.
Sixty years ago, on March 27, 1951, the Manteca High baseball team broke out in a rash of extra-base hits to overwhelm Ceres High 16-0 on the local diamond. Along with the finest sample of hitting shown by the local nine this year was the fine pitching performance of Larry Brashear. Brashear gave up but four hits. Ray Dellavecchia pounded out two triples and a double and Charles Snyder also had three for three for the Buffaloes.
Fifty years ago, on March 17, 1961, the Lodi High Flames showed why they are rated as the top prep baseball club in the area by taking a close 2-0 win from Manteca High in Lodi. Manteca's Tim Brumley turned in a good performance in limiting the hard-hitting Flames to four hits, but Lodi's Don Webster was also stingy and held the locals to only two hits. 10 years ago: March 24, 2001 - Strong pitching by both baseball teams kept the bases clear for much of the game as visiting Los Banos High edged Manteca High 1-0 on Friday. The Buffaloes cracked out six hits in the loss as Ryan Cardoza's two doubles were wasted.
20 years ago: March 9, 1991 - East Union High baseball coach Darrell Hardcastle used all 19 of his players en route to an 11-1 romp over visiting Edison High yesterday. The bench supplied six of the Lancers' 10 hits and scored five runs. Mike Costa pitched the first six innings, allowing just one run on seven hits to earn the win. Eric Simoni, Clint Colwell and Brian Bettencourt each had a pair of hits for EU. Simoni scored three times.
Seventy years ago, on March 14, 1941, Manteca's high school baseball squad will open its 1941 season here this afternoon when it tangles with the first squad that Escalon High has sent out in the last seven years to contest other teams. Coach Larry Siemering gives the probable players to start on his powerful nine as follows: catcher, Nick Baturin; pitcher, Lou Bronzan; first base, John Poulos; second base, "Murph" Theiler; shortstop, James Miniaci; third base, Jack Liebhart; left field, Fredrick Hubbard; center, Willard Rieger; and either Bob Bordenave or Orange in right field.
20 years ago: March 5, 1991 - Manteca High held its annual winter social Monday night, awarding athletes in each sport with plaques of recognition. MHS Athletic Director Walker Vick presented the MHS/VOL Scholar Athlete awards to the Buffaloes who had maintained a grade point average of over 3.7 while participating in varsity athletics. Two-sport participants included Erin Lathrop (volleyball and basketball), Sue Nunes (tennis and basketball) and Peter Smith (football and wrestling). 20 years ago: February 23, 1991 - The Manteca High baseball team exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh inning to win its season opener at Franklin High in Stockton 6-1 on Friday. The big hit was a bases-loaded double by Bobby Magnuson, which drove in three runs. He had another double to lead the Buffalo hitters. Coach Jack Thomson praised Buff starting pitcher Jared Murillo, who pitched four innings, struck out six and walked only one.
Eighty years ago, on February 20, 1931, Manteca High School dropped a hotly-contested game to the Oakdale High cagers by the score of 19-17. Eighty years ago, on December 18, 1934, Manteca High's basketball team scored a victory over the St. Mary's High quintet in Stockton. The Buffaloes came out on top by a score of 33 to 23. Milo Candini had 14 points for Manteca, with Harold Reynolds taking 11.
Fifty years ago, on December 16, 1964, the surprising Manteca High Buffaloes rolled to their second straight Valley Oak League win by posting a 69-62 win over St. Mary's High of Stockton. The locals were led by the scoring of Mike Hopper with 23 points, while Mike Iribarren had 19 points.
