1991: EU High baseball rolls over Edison, 11-0

20 years ago: March 9, 1991 - East Union High baseball coach Darrell Hardcastle used all 19 of his players en route to an 11-1 romp over visiting Edison High yesterday. The bench supplied six of the Lancers' 10 hits and scored five runs. Mike Costa pitched the first six innings, allowing just one run on seven hits to earn the win. Eric Simoni, Clint Colwell and Brian Bettencourt each had a pair of hits for EU. Simoni scored three times.

1971: Gebhardt new East Union football coach

Seventy years ago, on March 14, 1941, Manteca's high school baseball squad will open its 1941 season here this afternoon when it tangles with the first squad that Escalon High has sent out in the last seven years to contest other teams. Coach Larry Siemering gives the probable players to start on his powerful nine as follows: catcher, Nick Baturin; pitcher, Lou Bronzan; first base, John Poulos; second base, "Murph" Theiler; shortstop, James Miniaci; third base, Jack Liebhart; left field, Fredrick Hubbard; center, Willard Rieger; and either Bob Bordenave or Orange in right field.

1991: EU tops All VOL boys hoop picks

20 years ago: March 5, 1991 - Manteca High held its annual winter social Monday night, awarding athletes in each sport with plaques of recognition. MHS Athletic Director Walker Vick presented the MHS/VOL Scholar Athlete awards to the Buffaloes who had maintained a grade point average of over 3.7 while participating in varsity athletics. Two-sport participants included Erin Lathrop (volleyball and basketball), Sue Nunes (tennis and basketball) and Peter Smith (football and wrestling). 1991: Sierra falls short in section hoop title game

20 years ago: February 23, 1991 - The Manteca High baseball team exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh inning to win its season opener at Franklin High in Stockton 6-1 on Friday. The big hit was a bases-loaded double by Bobby Magnuson, which drove in three runs. He had another double to lead the Buffalo hitters. Coach Jack Thomson praised Buff starting pitcher Jared Murillo, who pitched four innings, struck out six and walked only one.

1931: Manteca High has best hoop season ever

Eighty years ago, on February 20, 1931, Manteca High School dropped a hotly-contested game to the Oakdale High cagers by the score of 19-17. This contest decided the San Joaquin-Stanislaus C.I.F. championship. Harold Reeves, veteran guard for the Buffaloes, proved a star by looping several difficult shots and outwitting the Mustangs. 2001: Moore’s 3-pointer wins SHS playoff game

10 years ago: February 24, 2001 - East Union High senior Sergio Lopez wrestled his way into the semi-finals of the Sac-Joaquin Section tournament on Friday, being the only local prep wrestler to advance. Lopez, at the 127-pound weight class, won both of his matches on 6-1 and 5-1 decisions. He will face an opponent from Golden Sierra High on Saturday.

Seventy years ago, on February 7, 1941, Manteca High hit the winning stride in the Manteca High School gym. The Buffaloes defeated Ceres High, who had previously overpowered the local quintet, the local varsity winning their game, 35 to 33 in an exicting overtime tussle. In the extra three minutes, "Sleepy" Poulos sank a nice field basket to put the game on ice 35 to 33. High-point man for the Buffalo squad, Ken Drury, had seven buckets for a total of 14 points and Glen Bale was next with 10 points.

Seventy years ago, on February 7, 1941, Manteca High hit the winning stride in the Manteca High School gym. 20 years ago: January 26, 1991 - Underdog Manteca High stayed right with its highly-regarded neighbors from East Union High Friday night, but couldn't overcome seven three-pointers by the Lancers, finally going down 58-50 in a boys' basketball matchup at Winter Gym. EU stayed atop the VOL standings with a perfect 3-0 record to go with their overall mark of 18-3. 1941: Buffaloes avenge earlier loss to Ripon High

Seventy years ago, on January 28, 1941, for the first time to date in this year's basketball season, the Manteca High cagers won a game played on the local high school floor. 1981: Buff cagers net 25th straight VOL win

Eighty years ago, on January 16, 1931, Manteca High now leads the C.I.F. league as a result of a victory taken from the Ceres High Bulldogs on the Manteca court. The Bulldogs were trounced to the score of 31 to 13. The Buffaloes piled up a 10-point lead before the Bulldogs could get going. This lead was never overtaken, although the score at the half was 13 to 10. Enrico Bianchi was the high scorer for Manteca with 10 points.

1981: Brown named new East Union football coach

Thirty years ago, on January 15, 1981, speculation about who would become the new varsity football coach at East Union High School ended when the Manteca Unified School District approved the appointment of Jim C. Brown. The 42 year-old Brown, a long-time assistant coach under Walker Vick at Manteca High, will succeed Vern Gebhardt, who resigned last November.

1971: Teicheira all-conference at Oregon Tech

Forty years ago, on January 8, 1971, Frank Teicheira of Manteca, playing football for Oregon Technical Institute, was honored by being named an all-Evergreen Conference fullback. The 5-7, 195-pound player was also selected as a member of the 12-school district team. The Owls honored him by selecting him most valuable player and as most outstanding back. Last year, Teicheira was named as an all-conference linebacker.

1984: Gase pitches Babe Ruth no-hitter

Twenty years ago, on July 2, 1994, the Manteca Babe Ruth 13 year-old all-stars came alive to capture the District 1 championship at Ripon High on Saturday. Coach Ron Kackley's boys exploded for 10 early runs en route to a14-10 victory over Modesto. The win qualifies the local squad for the Central California State Tournament which starts in Lompoc on July 13. Troy Vick and Rich Rocha each had three hits, including one double apiece, to pace the Manteca attack. Rocha drove in four runs.

1994: 6 swimmers have three wins each for Dolphins

Ninety years ago, on June 8, 1924, the Manteca High baseball team was defeated by a score of 13 to 4 by Sacramento High in the semi-finals for the Northern California interscholastic baseball championship. The defeat was quite a blow to the local aggregation as it invaded the northern field with high hopes of winning. In defeating Benicia High a few days previous, the local boys proved they were championship material.
