Sixty years ago, on December 20, 1951, Manteca High turned in one of their poorest showings of the year when they were knocked out of the Modesto Basketball Carnival with two straight defeats. In the opener, the Buffaloes lost to Denair High 37-26. Playing two 10-minute halves, the players were limited to three personal fouls apiece. This proved costly for the Buffaloes as three of the first five were ejected from the game. The locals were once again led by forward Joe Coito who picked up 13 points.
The Ripon Chiefs youth football and cheer program is hosting its annual dinner and dance fundraiser Saturday, Aug. 6, at the Ripon Community Center.
20 years ago: May 25, 1991 - Manteca High's Rick Asbell took second place in Friday's Sac-Joaquin Section shot-put final with a heave of 56-9. That allowed him to advance to the state meet for the second straight year. The meet will be held at Cerritos College next week. The East Union High 4x400 relay team shattered the school record with a time of 3:19.5 for sixth place, not good enough to advance. The team consisted of John Brooks, DelShaun Williams, Larry Martinez and LaShawn Daniels.
20 years ago: May 11, 1991 - Manteca High's Paul Gutierrez hurled a three-hitter to lead the Buffs to a 3-1 VOL baseball win over East Union High Friday afternoon at MHS. Gutierrez had done the same thing in the first meeting between the two city teams. The junior left-hander walked five and struck out eight. Junior Dain Cilley led the Buffs' attack, going three-for-four at the plate, scoring once and driving in a run.
Sixty years ago, on May 4, 1951, Win Converse was selected as "Baseball Fan of 1951" by members of the Manteca High baseball team at a party. Mr. Converse has been attending ball games since the first teams were organized in the early days of the city. He was presented an autographed baseball by Coach Arte Fairbanks and members of the team. Bob Turk and Pete Arizcuren were presented a new baseball and bat as top hitters of the team by Coach Fairbanks.
Twenty years ago, on May 1, 1991, the East Union High boys 4x400 relay team sprinted to fourth place in the Meet of Champions at Cordova High in Rancho Cordova, breaking a 12 year-old school record. The team of LaShawn Daniels, DelShaun Williams, Larry Martinez and John Brooks finished in 3:24.6, destroying the 1979 mark of 3:26.3 set by Andy Carroll, Jim Jennings, Kevin Von Essen and Lynn Mackey.
20 years ago: April 27, 1991 - East Union High's tennis team took a 9-6 victory over Los Banos High Friday while Manteca High was drubbed 12-3 by VOL champion Sonora High. EU's James Vu and Mike Newman gave up just one game each in leading the Lancer netters. In the Buffaloes' match, MHS managed only three singles wins, two of them by Eric Agnew.
Ninety years ago, on April 24, 1921, the Manteca Maulers again met defeat at the hands of the Sperrys of Stockton in a 14-inning game of thrills and excitement. Gilligan pitched a fair game for seven innings and then Elmer Blodgett took the mound and pitched good ball. "Spec" Shea for Stockton pitched the full 14 innings. The final score was 4 to 3. Some rotten decisions by umpire Weatherbee lost the game. 20 years ago: April 24, 1991 - The annual cross-town swim meet between Manteca High and East Union High Schools didn't disappoint the fans and athletes Friday at the Lincoln Park pool. The Lady Lancers were thrilled to beat out the MHS girls for the first time ever, while the Buffalo boys calmly clinched their third straight Valley Oak League dual meet championship, highlighted by a stunning upset in the 50-meter free style race. Fifty years ago, on April 18, 1961, Manteca High's swim team downed Ceres High in a dual meet held in Ceres. The final score was Manteca 58, Ceres 28. The Buffaloes were paced by Tom Honey, Jim Cunningham and Larry Hopkins. Honey took firsts in the 50 yard freestyle, individual medley and helped on the winning medley relay team. Cunningham took a first in the 200 yard freestyle and helped on the winning medley relay team. Hopkins took a first in the 100 yard backstroke and helped on the winning medley relay team.
20 years ago: April 13, 1991 - East Union High, using a seven-man, nine-hit attack, downed visiting Oakdale High 7-3 and claimed sole possession of first place in the VOL baseball race Friday afternoon. Combined with the four-hit pitching of Mike Costa and Brian Bettencourt, the Lancers improved to 4-1 in league play. Mark Kackley had two hits and drove in a pair of runs for EU.
Eighty years ago, on April 10, 1931, Manteca High twirler Bob Silva, allowing only four hits, easily defeated the Hilmar High nine, the score being 13 to 3. Silva fanned four men and walked five and was given good support in the field. Outstanding Buffalo players were Lisle Percival, who hit four for six, Charlie Percival, who got three for four and Ray Forsell, who connected three for five.
20 years ago: April 6, 1991 - Manteca High has had an impact on this year's baseball program at San Joaquin Delta College. Looking straight up the middle at last week's game against Chabot College, we saw catcher Ken Huckaby, on the mound was Eric Hill and patrolling center field was Oscar Castellanos. Huckaby has been offered a full-ride scholarship to the University of Texas for his junior year.
Sixty years ago, on April 6, 1951, Manteca High's up and coming baseball nine came through with a 6-0 whitewashing over Livingston High. Highlight of the game was the no-hit performance of the Buffalo hurlers. Three local hurlers combined to turn in a no-hitter. Johnny Cabrera opened on the mound for the Buffs, but was relieved in the second when he appeared to have trouble finding the plate. Henry Braghetta chucked until the fifth inning and little Al Limas came in to finish the game. Bob Turk, with two for three, was the leading hitter for the locals.
20 years ago: April 2, 1991 - The Manteca High baseball team ended up victors in the first day of the Dick Windemuth Easter Tournament at Modesto's Downey High yesterday. The Buffaloes ended up the victors in a 7-6 see-saw affair against Davis High of Modesto. MHS rallied from a 6-4 deficit in their last at-bats. Paul Gutierrez delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single to tie the score. Gutierrez later scored the winning run on a single by Larry Maestas.
