1970: Buffaloes battle Wooster to scoreless tie

Eighty years ago, on October 31, 1930, Manteca High played the hardest and best game of the year when they tangled with the Oakdale High Brownies on the local field. Although the score was 20 to 6 in favor of the visitors, the Manteca people saw perhaps the gamest fight ever witnessed on a Manteca field. The Buffaloes held the Brownies scoreless the entire first half and pushed over a touchdown for themselves. During the first quarter, Jim Fox broke loose for several beautiful runs, finally carrying the ball over from the two yard line on the first play of ...

2000: Buffs surprise Tracy with 35-20 win

Thirty years ago, on October 23, 1980, Amy Powell, a slender, six-foot senior, turned in another devastating performance as she and her East Union High teammates dumped their cross-town rivals, the Manteca High Lady Buffs, in two straight volleyball games at Winter Gym. EU survived a shaky start in the first game to topple the Buffs, 15-9, and then continued their torrid play in the second meeting to capture a 15-8 decision. The hard-hitting Powell was the dominating force on the court, blocking balls near the net and producing seven unreturnable spikes on the night. The win puts Christie Chisholm ...

1980: Shafer interception sets up final Buff TD

Thirty years ago, on October 14, 1980, Manteca High overcame a 14-point deficit and then turned back a last-gasp effort by arch-rival East Union High to hang on to a spine-tingling 21-20 victory before a delirious, jam-packed throng at Guss Schmiedt Field. The resilient Buffaloes of Coach Walker Vick fought back to score 21 unanswered points. The Lancers scored first as Billy Emperador scampered 45 yards off tackle behind the blocks of Kelly Stewart and Chris Patzer. George Clarkson passed to Stewart for the two-point conversion. 1950: Silva’s three touchdowns lead Buffs to win over Christian Brothers

Seventy years ago, on September 29, 1940, Harold Garvine's Manteca Merchants went barbaric in the eighth frame of its baseball tilt with Melrose Boosters. The final score favored Manteca 10-7.

1970: Buffs top favored Tracy in football, 14-0

Seventy years ago, on September 19, 1940, Larry Siemering's fighting Manteca High Buffaloes opened their 1940 grid season in fine style when they squeezed through with a 7-6 win over the Modesto High Panthers at the Modesto Junior College oval. And that slim one-point margin can be credited to Captain Lou Bronzan's trusty right foot as he accurately toed the pigskin through the uprights after he had tallied from the four-yard stripe a moment before to tie the game. The scores occurred in the second quarter. The entire second half was played rather slowly with Manteca threatening several ...

2000: Lancer runners sweep 3-way meet

Twenty years ago, on September 17, 1990, for the first time in more than a decade, the East Union High cross country team has notched a victory over cross-town rival Manteca High. In fact, the triumph at Durham Ferry Park was a double one since the Lancers also earned a win in the girls division. MHS was unable to field a team and forfeited the race. "The tide is changing, East Union is becoming a force to contend with," said an enthused Lancer coach Dan King. "This year, we have a lot of sophomores and juniors," said Buffalo coach Bob ...

1970: Serious injuries plague East Union High

Seventy years ago, on September 8, 1940, Manteca's Merchants were bid a dramatic farewell in the final Central League playoff. In a game that was booked as the playoff to determine the second half winner and predicted to be a hotly-contested battle throughout, it turned out to be nothing short of a farce. The final score was Solari's Inn 17, Manteca 1. The Solarians pounded Bill Enders, Lentz Greenhalgh and Pete Evenson before Manager Harold Garvine threw in the sponge and it was agreed to call the game at the end of the seventh inning.
