Area goal leader Braian Gomez was one of five Sierra Timberwolves named to the all-Valley Oak League first team.

The top honors were split between the league’s top two teams. Omar Leon was voted Coach of the Year after leading Central Valley to its second straight VOL championship.

Central Valley’s ultra-skilled playmaker Jose Ramirez (16 goals, 21 assists) and Ceres’ Luis Martinez (25 goals seven assists) were named the co-Most Valuable Players.

The crosstown rivals met for the Sac-Joaquin Section’s Division IV playoff championship Saturday, and Ceres (12-2-2, 17-3-3 overall) stunned the Hawks (12-1-3, 17-4-5) 2-0 in its second finals appearance in a row. Ceres also beat third-place Sierra 2-0 in the semifinal.

Sierra (11-2-3, 17-8-3) qualified for the playoffs for the first time since winning the league title and advancing to the final round in 2006.

Gomez and fellow first-team selection Antonio Cabrera of Central Valley each finished with 29 goals overall to lead all VOL players.

Sierra midfielders Ricky Pacheco (19 goals) and David Reyes, goalkeeper Luis Garcia and defender Emmanuel Ortiz also earned first-team honors. Ortiz made the first team for the second straight season.

East Union defender Jordan Jeffery and Manteca defender Vince Herrera round out area players selected to the first team.

Talented underclassmen highlight the all-league second team. Sophomore midfielders David Molina (Weston Ranch) and Victor Garibay (East Union) made the list, as did Sierra freshman Erick Noriega. Senior forwards Oscar Garcia (Sierra) and Julio Pimentel (East Union) are also on the second team.

Earning honorable mention were: East Union’s Jorge Saldate; Manteca’s Robert Geerlof and Jose Maravilla; and Weston Ranch’s Jesus Pacheco, B.J. Gonzales, Eddie Pacheco and Christian Asencio.
