Weston Ranch High has a tradition of holding off at announcing the top two academic students until awards night.

Lucero Ambriz Madrigal knew she was in the mix. Just where was yet to be determined. “It was very nerve wracking,” she said on Wednesday.

As it turned out, the daughter of Deolinda and Fernando Ambriz was named salutatorian for the Class of 2014 thanks to her 4.19 grade point average.

“I’m very excited on getting to speak at graduation and seeing the reaction of my peers and parents,” she said.

Ambriz Madrigal was active during her four years at the school. She came to WRHS via Great Valley School, taking part in soccer and cross country.

As for clubs, she was vice president of Key Club, secretary of the Leadership program, and involved in Students in Prevention.

“I enjoyed all the activities,” she said.

Ambriz Madrigal described the latter as a peer-to-peer drug intervention program. She was influenced by her experience of helping others that she’s now considering going into nursing.

In the fall, Ambriz Madrigal will be attending California State University, Stanislaus with Nursing as her major. She looked at other schools, including UC Irvine, CSU Long Beach and UC Davis.

The past four years, WRHS has been a comfortable place for Ambriz Madrigal. That’s what she’ll miss most with college looming right around the corner.

“I would see the same people so often that this place is like home,” said Ambriz Madrigal.
