Austin Peterson, 15-year-old Sierra High student, was struck by an eastbound ACE commuter train about 6:30 p.m. Monday – just 10 feet from the end a railroad trestle across the San Joaquin River.
Peterson and a teenage friend were riding their bicycles on the trestle when the ACE train was approaching the Lathrop-Manteca station on Yosemite Avenue just east of McKinley Avenue.
His friend, who was not struck by the train, called his father on his cell phone in the nearby Oakwood Shores residential area.  The dad reportedly ran from his home to the accident scene and performed CPR on the injured teen – but the youth died at the scene.
The train crew braked the seven car commuter train and came to a stop some 100 yards down the tracks.
In a release on Facebook, the Manteca Unified School District responded:
“Sierra High School suffered the tragic loss of a student.  Manteca unified School District and Sierra High School staff are deeply saddened by this news and send to the family and friend our condolences.  In addition to our professional caring, Sierra High School staff, additional counselors, nurses and psychologists will be on campus as needed today to provide services to students and staff.”
Cause of the accident is still under investigation.
The Bulletin received information at the scene Monday night indicating the deceased was older.

I have lived adjacent to the levee right here since 1988. I raised my kids here. And, that train trestle has always been a draw for kids, including my own. However, this time the 3 boys involved were on bikes, which is treacherous, and obviously fatal. Parents need to know where their kids are at all times. It was so sad..the 3rd boy came running through the mobile home park screaming 'Help' husband and our good friend ran back with him, while I called 911....I do not believe this is the first fatality here either.

Please wait ...
