SANTA ROSA  (AP) — Dozens of demonstrators in Northern California protested the return to work of a sheriff’s deputy who fatally shot a 13-year-old boy.

Sonoma County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Sgt. Cecile Focha says about 40 people gathered outside the department’s headquarters in Santa Rosa on Saturday to protest the return of deputy Erik Gelhaus, who is set to return to full duty patrol this week.

Authorities say no arrests were reported.

The 48-year-old Gelhaus has been on administrative leave since he shot and killed Andy Lopez in Santa Rosa on October 22, 2013. Gelhaus told investigators that he feared for his life when he mistook the teen’s replica pellet gun for an AK-47 assault rifle.

Sonoma County District Attorney Jill Ravitch announced last month she would not file criminal charges against the 48-year-old Gelhaus.
