TRACY – New Jerusalem Elementary School District, on the verge of collapse a decade ago, will open its 141st school year on Aug.14 as healthy as ever.
“Our families have really responded to the dedication and hard work our staff has provided for their children,” said Superintendent David Thoming, entering his 12th year at the helm. “With nearly 6,000 students served by the district, especially where we are located, says something about the quality of our programs.”
NJESD is now the fifth largest district in San Joaquin County.
Over the past five years, Thoming and his leadership team have created a menu of options for families to consider. Embedded within the school options are educational enhancement programs such as agriculture education, music, media arts, athletics, forensics, digital curricula, and parent empowerment.
NJESD operates 11 schools, a jump from just three schools in 2012, and it authorizes four additional charter schools run by independent operators.
“We will continue to work to improve what we do,” said Thoming, who attended NJESD schools. “It is really simple for us. We operate with a kids first mentality and I believe it shows.”
While the district will start on August 14, Delta Bridges Charter School, located in Stockton, will open on August 28 due to construction delays, coupled with the school’s enhancement of a science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics program (STEAM).
