Kodi Mattox has always wanted to play Horton from Dr. Seuss book, ‘Horton Hears a Who.’

The 2013 graduate of Downey High will do just that at this weekend’s performance of “Seussical the Musical Jr.” at Cornerstone Community Church.

“I’ve really enjoyed working with this group,” Mattox said Thursday during dress rehearsals.

Included are 55 youngsters of the Cornerstone Community Theater, ranging in age from 8 to 18.

“Seussical the Musical Jr.” is under the direction of Michealle Hoag.

“I really like Michealle. She a great director and makes everything fun,” said Atlantah Hoag, who plays Mayzie La Bird.

She describes her character as “snobby – someone who thinks she’s better than everybody.”

Brad Schmidt, 18, plays the Cat in the Hat.

“The Cat is fun. He’s the one behind the scenes, pulling the strings – he’s a bit mischievous, like me,” he said.

The play also stars Elijah Braley as one of the Whos (Jo Jo) and Bailey Dokoozlian as Gertrude McFuzz.

“Seussical the Musical Jr.” is the latest production of Cornerstone, which performed Disney’s Cinderella along with Disney’s The Jungle Book and Willy Wonka in previous years.

The opening is tonight at 7 o’clock at the church located at 17900 Comconex Rd. Manteca.

A pair of performance is planned for Saturday, including a 2 p.m. matinee and 7 o’clock showing.

The encore takes place on Sunday at 4 p.m.

Tickets are now on sale.

Cost is $5 general admission and $10 preferred seating.
