STOCKTON – Josiah Martinez got the Lathrop Jr. Spartans junior novice on the board with a 65-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second half, but the Spartans had dug themselves too much of a hole and lost 40-12 to the Northwest Trojans 40-12 in the DYFL Super Bowl at Bear Creek High’s Podesto Field.

With Lathrop kept off the board in the first half and generating less than 60 yards of offense, the Spartans trailed 28-0 at halftime. Lathrop caught fire in the second half with Martinez finishing with 196 yards on 14 carries with an additional touchdown run of 20 yards.

“We made some adjustments in the second half with our offense,” Spartans coach Tony Hernandez said. “We slowed our cadence down, made some shifts and figured out what holes they were not shooting.”

Martinez and Marriah Mathews led the Lathrop defense with nine tackles each. David Graham added five stops with Francisco Montano and Malachi Gonzales making three stops each.
