SAN DIEGO (AP) — Both a suspect and a San Diego County sheriff’s dog have been hospitalized after the man attacked the dog and then was shot by a deputy.

Deputies were called early Saturday to investigate an armed man yelling and breaking things in Rancho Santa Fe.

Sheriff’s Lt. Kenneth Nelson says a man in his 50s was armed with a knife when deputies deployed a sheriff’s dog to subdue him. The man attacked the dog, named Banjer, stabbing the dog under his left eye. Ultimately the suspect threatened deputies with the knife and was shot.

He was treated at the scene and taken to a hospital. The suspect’s condition was unknown.

Banjer was rushed to an animal hospital for emergency surgery and is expected to recover.
