FRESNO — Although he was unable to cut time from his previous appearance in the CIF State Championships, Sierra junior Jesse Hurtado did improve 33 spots in the Division III boys race at Woodward Park on Saturday.

Hurtado led four area state qualifiers with a time of 16 minutes, 26.5 seconds, about 5 seconds slower than last year. It was his third trip to the meet after helping Sierra advance as a team his freshman year.

Valley Oak League rival Noe Reyes of East Union took 72nd in 16:50.3. Hurtado beat Reyes to earn the VOL individual crown, but their teams ended up sharing the league title.

A brisk start cost two-time VOL girls champion Megan Oblin in her second go-around at the state finale. She finished 27th in 19.23.2 after setting a school record with a time of 18:36.5 in 2016.

Making her debut at Woodward Park was Ripon Christian freshman Elle Wyngarde, who checked in at 22:05.8 for 131st place out of 200 entrants in Division V.

Malibu junior Claudia Lane set a new course record in the 31st annual event, crossing the finish in 16:31 while capturing the Division IV individual crown.

Ryle Bowen of Sonoma Academy won the Division V girls competition for a third straight year, and Capistrano Valley’s Haley Herberg clocked the second-best Division II girls time of 17:00.

Great Oak highlighted team accomplishments, as its girls team seized a sixth straight title in Division I while the boys claimed its fourth in a row.
