LATHROP — The Lathrop girls basketball team was ready for its Valley Oak League opener Tuesday night after seeing high-caliber competition from the San Diego area for four straight days.
And it showed in the Spartans’ 59-36 trouncing of Central Catholic.
Myani Thornton scored 16 points in a well-rounded scoring effort for Lathrop (1-0, 8-4 overall), which jumped out to a 14-6 lead and continued its dominance from there. A 20-6 third-quarter barrage helped the Spartans expand their lead to 49-22.
Lathrop went 10-3 in the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic last week but gained valuable experience along the way.
“We think our league is pretty strong, but that was the purpose of us going down there was to see high-level competition to be ready for league,” Lathrop coach Dwayne Davis said. “I thought we played a fairly clean game tonight. We were efficient inside and outside and got scoring all over the roster.
“The biggest difference was our defense. We were pretty intense and were able to pull away. We made a lot of substitutions throughout the game and every player who got in responded very well.”
Twelve different Spartans contributed with points. Rylene Crull contributed 11. Jasmine Kelly and Stephanie Valenzuela Cortes each had eight for the visiting Raiders (0-1, 8-5).
Lathrop travels to East Union on Thursday.
