LATHROP — Lathrop High’s boys soccer team earned its first win in three weeks and did so in dramatic fashion Wednesday at Bennie Gatto Field, coming back from an early two-goal deficit to upend Central Catholic, 3-2.

Christian Cardenas came through for the game winner in the 68th minute, starting the one-man counter-attack with a steal at midfield before dribbling past two defenders for the put-away.

“We finally learned how to win a close, tough game,” Lathrop coach Alfredo Reynaga said.

The Spartans (2-6-2 Valley Oak League, 5-10-3 overall) last won on Jan. 10, edging Manteca, 3-2. They since came up with surprising ties against East Union and Oakdale but also had competitive losses to Central Catholic, Kimball, Sierra and Weston Ranch All six of those matches were on the road.

“It was nice to have a home game,” Reynaga said. “We haven’t had one in a while.”

Central Catholic (2-5-1, 3-7-3) was the aggressor to start the rematch, netting the first two goals inside the first 13 minutes.

“I think that woke us up,” Reynaga said.

Ronaldo Macias sparked Lathrop, first assisting Luis Vargas’ rocket shot long range in the 16th minute. Macias then scored one of his own off a corner kick from Victor Enriquez.

Reynaga lauded the efforts of senior captain and center back Juan Luna and goalkeeper Will Smith, who recorded eight saves.

“He played like a Tasmanian devil back there,” Reynaga said of Luna. “He saved us a lot.”
