ATWATER — East Union put it all together in its 8-1 drubbing of Atwater on Friday.
Fernando Segura twirled a two-hit gem, striking out 11 and walking none while the Lancers (3-0) committed no errors behind him. He had more than enough run support, as East Union doled out 10 hits that included three doubles.
Segura ended the game in style, striking out the side in order.
“(Segura) was on his game, locating his pitches and changing speeds,” East Union coach Dan Triglia said. “Very nice performance from him and a really good job behind the plate today by Andrew Mount.
“The defense was solid with no errors today, so that was a nice bounce-back from the issues we had on Wednesday (four errors in a 9-5 win over Linden). It was nice to see the guys rise to the occasion.”
Segura certainly did his part after surviving a rough patch in the second inning. Atwater (2-2) did all of its damage in the frame, with Jacob Mooneyham slugging a double, Colby Flatt adding a hit and Zeek Cardenas driving in the Falcons’ lone run.
Segura was already spotted a four-run lead at that point. In the top half of the second, the Lancers rallied for four runs behind Danny Marquez’s two-run double and Cameron Ceja’s RBI double. Brayden Hardcastle later crushed a two-run double in the sixth to stretch the lead to 7-1.
Marquez finished 3 for 5 with three RBIs. Hardcastle also drove in three runs and went 2 for 5. Mason James and Ceja connected for two hits apiece.
“Solid game all the way around,” Triglia said.
East Union will look to continue its momentum heading into Valley Oak League play with a home game against Pitman (2-1) next Wednesday.
