Ripon opens Hilmar tourney with big win

HILMAR – Ripon High opened the Hilmar Baseball Tournament with a lopsided 18-4 affair over Gustine on Monday.

The Indians (8-2) were up 12-3 going into the final frame.

“We added those six in the seventh (inning),” said coach Jacob Rodriguez.

Ripon took a 3-0 lead in the first, tacking on three while taking a 6-3 advantage after three innings.

Gustine (3-8) of the Southern Athletic League played earlier that day, falling 4-2 to Le Grand.

Brandon Rainer led the Indians. The sophomore catcher went 6 for 6 at the plate with a home run and six RBI against the Reds.

“Brandon had a big game,” added Rodriguez.

He also received a strong game from senior Donald Cooksey, who went 3 for 5 with three RBI.

The winning pitcher was Jake Komatsu. The senior hurler allowed three runs and three hits during four innings of work.

Next up for Ripon in the Hilmar Tournament is Turlock Christian at 8 p.m. on Wednesday.



Kimball 3, Sierra 0

Sierra High was swept by visiting  Kimball in Monday’s Valley Oak League match.

The Timberwolves (0-4 VOL, 0-12) fell in the best-of-five-game match, 25-4, 25-16, 25-15.

Junior outside hitter Ric Garcia had eight digs and two kills while sophomore middle blocker delivered two aces and five kills.

The win was the first for the Jaguars (1-2 VOL, 8-5) in league play.

Sierra returns to VOL action on Wednesday at the home of crosstown rival East Union.
