RC dominates El Capitan in tourney play

Ripon Christian put up four runs in the first inning and never trailed El Capitan-Merced in a 9-2 second-round win for the Knights in Silver Bracket action in the Nor Cal Classic at Millennium High School. 

Five different Ripon Christian batters hit a double – Kelly Engel, Elizabeth Thomas (two RBI), Morgan Van Elderen (2 for 5, RBI) and Sarah Brown (2 for 5, two RBI). Megan Vander Molen added two RBI. 

Madison DeGraaf struck out seven and sprinkled six-hits in the complete-game win for the Knights (8-3). 

“Maddie pitched two awesome games,” Ripon Christian coach Lennie Rizutto said. “We had some timely hitting and our defense was awesome.”

The Gauchos (3-7) managed a run in the fourth inning and another in the seventh. 

The Knights play Mountain House this morning at 10 and Fall River at 2 p.m. with both games at West High School. 


Ripon Christian 6, Modesto 4

The Knights scored two runs in the second and three in the third, holding on for the come-from-behind win. 

DeGraaf was 2 for 3 with two doubles and two runs. Chapman and Thomas each had an RBI and a run.

The Panthers (4-8) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and a 4-2 lead in the third.


East Union 11, Napa 6

The Lancers (10-2) opened the NorCal Classic at the Tracy Softball Complex with an impressive win over Napa (9-3).

East Union had a big four-run fourth to surge ahead for good.

The Lancers will return to tournament play on Saturday.

The Cardinals (8-3-1) got three of their four runs in the fifth inning to hand the Indians (9-3) an opening-round loss. Ripon tried to rebound against the No. 25 team in the nation in the second round but dropped the two-run loss to the Miners.

Sydney Vernon paced the Indians attack, going 2 for 4 with an with an RBI. Makenna Daley was 2 for 5, Mackenzie Hutchinson doubled and had a pair of RBI and Bianca Toledo was 2 for 5 with an RBI.
