It was a perfect ending to a near perfect season for the Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross team as drivers Tanner Foust took the race victory while Manteca native Scott Speed locked up his third consecutive Red Bull Global Rallycross Supercar championship at the season finale in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Speed entered the weekend with a comfortable 30-point lead in the championship over Foust. Steve Aprin was the only other driver mathematically alive trailing Speed by 74 points at the start of the weekend.

Speed knew he was in for a rough ride on Saturday.

“If I was Foust I would be super aggressive too. It is his only chance,” explained Speed before the race. “I just want to stay away from trouble, find clear track and have a clean weekend.”

Foust did his part taking his heat, the semi-final and winning comfortably in the main event to pick up the maximum 81 points available to him.

Speed also picked up a win in the semi-finals to start on the front row of the main, but his road to the championship was much tougher.

He lost second place to both Patrik Sandell and Cabot Bigham in the first lap. Taking the joker lap on the final lap, he managed to fight his way back around both, returning to second place just before the checkered flag

“The whole week leading up to the race I was just constantly thinking of the what-ifs, all of the problems that could happen going in with such a big lead,” said Speed. “My hat is off to everyone – I have the best team out here. I’m so lucky for them - it was a team effort!”

Volkswagen set a Red Bull GRC record with nine race victories (five by Foust and four by Speed) in a single season on the way to its second consecutive Manufacturer’s Championship.
