Oakdale put up 21 second-quarter points Friday and coasted to a 42-6 win over East Union to open the Valley Oak League campaign at Dino Cunial Field.
“They’re good,” Lancers coach Willie Herrera said. “They are the real deal. They were big, real big, and they dominated up front.
“We were lined up right on both sides of the ball, but at times they just seemed to throw us out of the way.”
The Mustangs (1-0 VOL, 3-1 overall) outgained East Union (0-1, 3-1) 383 yards to 134 with an 18-7 advantage in first downs.
JoJo Espinosa and Raylan Carter were the bright spots for the Lancers offense, with Espinosa completing 9 of 16 passes for 71 yards and no interceptions. Carter made three catches for 26 yards while rushing for 31 yards on five carries.
Espinosa scored with 5:32 left in the game on a 9-yard run.
“They are good,” Herrera said. “Better than last year. We are better than we have been too, but they just manhandled us at times.”
Cameron Cherry paced the Mustangs with 94 yards on 15 carries with three touchdown runs. Josh Jacobson added 72 yards on 11 carries and scored Oakdale’s first two touchdowns of the game with 1- and 2-yard runs. The Mustangs led comfortably 35-0 at halftime, and their reserves took over after the first drive of the second half.
East Union will look to rebound next week at winless Kimball.
