Getting reacquainted to life in the 49th state

It’s Saturday. This morning I woke up, had an omelet made with a couple eggs from a dozen that cost $2.50, filled up my truck ($4.25 a gallon) and drove to the river .9 miles down the road for my 42nd day of fishing so far in 2014.

Guzzlers & trout houses

Several times I have encouraged folks to donate money to conservation organizations that assist the wild critters we all love. It’s good advice for those who can afford it, but what can you do if money is tight? It seems as though this recession has affected all of us to some extent. Big Brother watching?

Recent articles in the world news media have disclosed that our government, specifically the NSA, has been monitoring and recording the phone calls and emails of hundreds of millions of people all around the world. Ostensibly the eavesdropping is to detect and prevent acts of terrorism but substantial numbers of people aren’t convinced. Folks on the other side of the equation ask the rhetorical question: “If you’re not doing anything wrong, what do you have to worry about?” The fact is private information in the hands of others can harm you. Here’s an example.

Danger as woods go to pot

A couple days ago I was chatting with my friend Bob Busser about a growing danger to those of us who frequent wild places. Appearantly growing demand for marijuna has resulted in a number of illegal pot groves located on remote public lands. Some pot growers are now planting their crops on hard to reach sites on BLM, Forest Service, or even private timberlands. They’ll clear a space, till the soil, and even pipe water in from a nearby creek. If they should get busted, all they lose is the crop. Usually there is a grower/guard nearby to ...

Fishing can be a relaxing getaway

Ten years ago, I was listening to a local Bass Pro talk about today’s kids and their overall lack of interest toward the outdoors. He went on to talk about computer games and how few children are actually able to get out of the house anymore.

Wins now mean everything in NASCAR

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Joey Logano lined up directly behind Kevin Harvick and followed him nose-to-tail around the track and across the line for the final restart. He was stalking the leader, looking for what he knew would be his only chance to snatch the victory away from Harvick.
