For almost a year, the 209 Boardshop has been the only business in Manteca that caters exclusively to skateboarders – offering everything from decks to wheels and everything in between.
Unlike chain retailers, the 209 Boardshop is family-owned and operated and prides itself on presenting a level of customer service that people aren’t going to find elsewhere.
“When you come in here, we know your name – we remember who you are,” said Mary Washburn – the daughter of the owner who manages the shop. “You don’t get that at very many places, and it’s because we live here and we care about the people here.”
Located just a stone’s-throw away from the Manteca Skate Park, the shop routinely gets kids stopping in on their way to or from the park to pick up something they might need or replace something that they broke.
It’s not uncommon for the close quarters to fill up with young skateboarders hanging out with others that share the same interest.
For Washburn, getting to know the people that filter through the door is what makes coming to worth worthwhile – opening up doors to new friendships and getting the chance to share her love of skateboarding with others.
“I like hanging out with all of the people that come in here just to say hi,” Washburn said. “I love skateboarding, and it’s nice to be able to be around other people that love it too.”
Adorning one wall of the downtown shop is a complete line of skateboard decks ranging from the industry’s most-popular brands to shop decks designed by local skateboarder Ryan Carpenter.
Customers can take their pick of any one of a number of already completed skateboards, or pick and choose from the assortment of decks, wheels, and trucks on hand for their ideal custom.
A wide range of T-shirts are also available.
“If you’re a skateboarder, we’re going to have what you need,” Washburn said. “And for Christmas we’ve got everything from the perfect big gift down to stickers as stocking stuffers.”
