After Sylvia Chan and her husband Leo decided that it was time to walk away from the Jade Garden restaurant they had started in Modesto and operated for more than 10 years, they had to figure out what else to do.

Sylvia had planned to fill her time by taking an available position with the United States Postal Service, while Leo wasn’t quite sure about what he wanted to do next.

The longtime cook – who got his start working at the famed Jade Garden restaurant in Hong Kong – wasn’t quite sure that he was ready to step away from the kitchen for good.

So when an opportunity presented itself to take over the building that one time housed the Lee’s Chinese Buffet, the Chans jumped all over it – and are now working towards building a steady base of loyal customers that appreciate the service as well as what is being served.

“We knew that Manteca was a city that is expected to grow a lot in the coming years, and the people here have been so nice,” Sylvia Chan said. “I’m still getting familiar with the layout of the town, but when new people come in and we talk it helps get a better understand about who calls Manteca home.”

And given Leo’s background in the traditional ways of preparing Chinese cuisine, Sylvia expects that people will enjoy the variety of dishes that can each be prepared several different ways – putting a new spin on what most consumers would classify as “traditional” Chinese food.

“We want to introduce all of the good healthy dishes that we have, and give people an option,” Sylvia Chan said. “Leo can cook in different styles, so that makes it easy for someone to find something that they’ve never tried before – or they haven’t tried it prepared according to tradition.”

Jade Garden is located at 102 Pierce Avenue near Library Park. The restaurant is currently open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and closed on Sundays. For more information, or to place an order, call 239-2919.
