Janis Music enlisting additional instructors

George Janis is quick to say that “whenever one door closes, another will open.”

But the doors on his business – which have been a downtown Manteca staple for 48 years – aren’t going to be closing anytime soon.

Even with the rise of the Internet and music megastores that threaten the unique shop’s livelihood, Janis maintains a steady following of musical souls who are drawn into the private instruction offered by professional musicians.

The recent departure of several of the instructors, Janis said, will temporarily sting, but he believes that a new crop of talented musicians will not only take their place but usher in a whole new era.

“Sometimes it’s good to have some fresh blood, and these are guys that have real knowledge about the music business and what it takes to succeed in it,” Janis said. “That’s one of those things that you can’t learn from a book or a class. You have to live that to gain that sort of insight. And we’re hoping that we’ll be able to bring that knowledge to our students.”

One of the annual showpieces of the music classes – the summer music program and the annual concert which showcases the assembled bands – is slated to continue, and Janis believes that he’ll have the new roster of instructors ready by the end of the week.

Current plans are to publicly introduce the new crop in an open house on March 13 – allowing some of the new instructors to showcase their talents on their respective instruments and meet-and-greet prospective students in a friendly, family-oriented environment.

Janis also plans on making the live performance aspect of the open house a regular staple for customers, and also hopes to introduce incentives for customers like a month of free lessons with the purchase of a guitar as well as a free introductory lesson to anyone interested.

“Ideally, we hope to have everything in running order by the beginning of next week,” Janis said. “We’re still going to continue to do things like the summer music program – which was built up over a period of 15 years into what it has become – and we’re hoping to branch out to new students who want to take their musical knowledge to the next level.”
