Friday nights are continuing to hop at Main Street Café where The La La Rock Band from San Jose is the featured attraction with only a $5 cover charge.  Café owner Jakkie Arellano  said Josh Rosenblum will be the opening act at 7 p.m. with an hour long presentation of light rock.  The La La’s are set to go on at 8.

Jakkie said that more and more people are becoming aware that she is open Friday nights with featured entertainment for the Manteca community.  For additional information call 825-2242.

FOSSIL IMPRINTS FOUND ON CALAVERAS ROCKS
Renee Kee and her husband Ed with Ed’s Rockery made an interesting find last week when they went searching for unusual rocks in Calaveras County – rocks with fossil imprints of plant life.

“We’re bringing back a truckload of these wonderful Ryolite boulders,” she said. Their business is located at 6000 East Lathrop Road, just east of Highway 99.

Kee further explained the fossil imprints occurred from a layer of sediment when volcanoes exploded and created leaf and fern prints in the surface of the rocks.  She added her excitement about an upcoming “Build a Pondless Waterfall Day” that is set for May 2.  The waterfalls are planned to be two to three feet tall.

“The object is to teach people how to do it themselves and save some money,” she said.  Customers will also be getting 20 per cent off of their project costs.

BUSINESS & PROFESSIONAL OROPTIMISTS MAKE A DIFFERENCE
As part of the oldest service club in Manteca, Soroptimist members from business and the professions continue to make a difference.  The “theme luncheon” they have coming up May 18 with unique table décor pays the way for much of the high school student scholarships they hand out each year.  And on Sunday the 17th it’s about seeing a preview of the tables and bringing in your collectibles for appraisals. Tickets are available at Tipton’s Stationery and Quicki Kleen Car Wash, both located on Yosemite Avenue.

They recently awarded $12,000 in college scholarships - $7,000 to high school students -and another $5,000 in special recognition awards.  Jennifer Baltrans, in particular, their Women’s Opportunity Award winner received $500 in her quest to return to school for a nursing degree.  She won another $3,000 after she went on to regional competition.

FRANNIE JO’s SKIN CARE OPENING IN MANTECA SALON
Jodie Azevedo of Ripon is going into the skin care business in Sonia’s Beauty Salon on North Main Street in Manteca.  She was told by one of her peers that she should just do it – going into business for herself.  Jodie is offering services such as eyelash extensions for $95 as well as bridal and prom make up for $120.

EVERY DOG NEEDS AN ‘AUNTY’
Gotta admit that Aunty’s Grooming Salon for our four-legged friends has been operating under my radar on West Yosemite Avenue, just west of McKinley.  I got to meet the owner last weekend when doing a story on a high school senior who is doing her project outside the salon to raise funds for Manteca police dogs’ first aid kits.

What a place with a self-served dog wash setup they call “Laundromutt.”  Their hydro-surge bathing system and blow dryers are ready and waiting for their clients’ semi-occasional baths.  Cost runs from $8 to $19.  And if you’ve just adopted a dog – they have great respect for you – a 50 per cent discount awaits on the dog’s initial grooming.  Wow – that’s pretty neat.

THE DOG HOUSE – ‘WHERE YOUR PET WANTS TO BE’
Associated with the grooming salon is the “Dog House,” facility ready to board your pets for a day or longer.  The Dog House promises to provide freshly sanitized quarters for the duration of a pet’s stay with them.

The operators also boast morning play periods in separate indoor/outdoor yards with access to the “always green lawn” area and play equipment located throughout the yards.  Good morning hugs and potty breaks for all their overnight guests are provided prior to serving breakfast from their “Gourd-mutt” kitchen.

RIPON SHREDDING ERVICE BENEFITTING ANCER’S RELAY FOR LIFE
This Saturday morning from 9 until 1, a doctor’s office bookkeeper is hosting a shredding service in Ripon behind the offices of Dr. Dutter at 125 South Vera Avenue – just south of Main Street.

Carol Bauman, herself a cancer survivor, is charging $10 per “banker’s box” with the proceeds going toward Ripon’s upcoming Relay for Life to be held again at the Ripon High School’s Stouffer football stadium.  The commercial shredding service, Shred-It, will be on hand to handle the incoming material.

Can’t forget a quote she gave me from the son of a friend who had just been diagnosed with breast cancer:  “So, what’s the chances, like, what’s the percentage, (pause), that you will die?” the 11-year-old asked his mom.
