New truck tech links pairs of semi-trailers

RENO, Nev. (AP) — A high-tech firm in California used a stretch of Interstate 80 in Nevada to demonstrate new trucking technology intended to improve safety and fuel efficiency by linking pairs of semi-trucks that travel in aerodynamic platoons.

Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki joined officials for the Menlo Park-based Peloton Technology at the demonstration Thursday near Wadsworth about 30 miles east of Reno.

The system controls braking and acceleration, similar to adaptive cruise control. It features an array of on-board sensors and processors that track location, identify imminent hazards and assess surface conditions. A real-time video link also lets the rear driver see the road ahead of the platoon.

Similar road tests in Utah last year showed double-digit fuel savings for the C.R. England trucking fleet.
