MENLO PARK (AP) — Several dozen people gathered at Facebook’s headquarters to protest a company policy of asking users to authenticate their identities if questions have been raised about the names on their accounts.

KNTV in San Jose reports that about 60 people joined the protest Monday morning.

The campaign asks Facebook to eliminate its fake name reporting policy, which requires users to post under their real names and asks users to provide proof if the company has received a complaint.

Critics say the policy is unfair to transgender people and domestic violence victims that anybody can claim someone is using a fake name and report it to Facebook.

Facebook representatives say the rule is meant to curb anonymous cyber-bulling.

A Facebook spokesman tells KNTV that the company has worked to improve the policy by giving users more ways to verify their names.
