STOCKTON  – Walmart announced plans to begin construction this month on a full-service store located on Eight Mile Road in the Park West Place shopping center in the city of Stockton.

Additionally, construction on the Tracy Walmart store will begin.  Once complete, these two projects will create approximately 385 new jobs and generate additional tax revenues and economic opportunity throughout San Joaquin County.

Walmart will create approximately 300 new jobs once the new Stockton store is open and approximately 85 jobs once the store expansion is complete in Tracy. The retailer will also create numerous temporary jobs during the stores’ construction phase. A hiring center will open approximately three months prior to the stores’ grand-opening; job-seekers can visit www.walmartstores.com/careers for additional information on Walmart’s career opportunities.

The new, approximately 185,467-square-foot Stockton store will offer a full range of general merchandise, a pharmacy, an outdoor garden center and a full line of groceries, including fresh produce, meat and dairy products, a bakery and deli. It will also incorporate advanced sustainable environmental features such as high-efficiency LED lighting, skylights and automatic light-dimming systems. Walmart anticipates this store will open in Summer 2012.

The existing Tracy Walmart store will be expanded by approximately 70,079 square feet to offer a full line of groceries including fresh produce, meat and dairy products, a bakery and deli along with an expanded outdoor garden center. The store will remain open during the construction of the expansion.  Walmart anticipates the expansion being complete in Fall 2012.

Walmart purchased more than $212 million in goods and services with San Joaquin County-based suppliers last fiscal year.  As a result of Walmart’s relationship with these suppliers, Walmart supports more than 3,800 supplier jobs in the county.

As of June 2011, the total number of Walmart associates in California was 70,115 with the average wage for a regular, full-time hourly associate at $12.60 per hour.
