Christmas alters Sunday services for some churches

On Sunday, the day after Christmas, Sequoia Heights Baptist Church will have only one worship service at 10 a.m. Regular services on Sunday are held at 8:15 and 11 a.m.

Sequoia Heights Baptist at the corner of South Union Road and Wawona Avenue is not the only church in the area that is altering its weekend church schedule because of Christmas falling on a Saturday this year.

At St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Manteca, there will be no anticipated Mass at 5 p.m. or a Spanish Mass at 7 p.m. Instead, there will be two Masses in the morning in English at 8 and 10 a.m., with a Spanish Mass starting at noon.

Also on Sunday, the regularly scheduled 6 p.m. Teen Mass will not be held. However, there will be Mass services offered at the usual times: 7 a.m., 8:45 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. in English, and 12:30 p.m. in  Spanish.

Additionally, since Christmas day is a holy day of obligation for Catholics, attending any of the services on that day or the Christmas Eve service will fulfill that obligation. However, they still need to attend Mass on Sunday, Dec. 26, to fulfill their Sunday obligation.

There are four Mass schedules for Christmas Eve: the Children’s Mass at 4 p.m., English Mass at 6 p.m., Spanish Mass at 8 p.m., and the traditional Midnight Mass at 12 a.m.

Several area churches are also holding Christmas Eve services on Friday, Dec. 24.

At Calvary Community on East Lathrop Road in Manteca, there will be two services with the first one starting at 4 p.m. followed by another at 5 p.m. Sunday will have the regular worship services at 8:30, 9:45 and 11 a.m., and at 6 p.m.

St. Paul’s United Methodist Church on the corner of Powers Avenue and North Street will have two candlelight services on Christmas Eve – the first one to start at 6 p.m., and the other at 11 p.m. On Sunday will be the usual 10 a.m. worship service.

Sequoia Heights Baptist has also a candlelight Christmas Eve service set for 6 p.m. on Friday.

There are no Christmas services planned at the Place of Refuge (Assembly of God) on Button Avenue. The church office is closed starting on Dec. 17 until Jan. 4, 2011. Regular Sunday services will be held during that period – with prayer service at 8:30 a.m. and worship service at 10 a.m. In case of emergency, those who need to contact a pastor can call Terry at (209) 601-6228.
