Fifty-six percent of adults who completed home improvements in the past year spent $1,000 or more, according to The Scarborough Report. Next time you’re faced with a home improvement project, instead of wasting money throwing away fixable objects or hiring professionals for quick and easy repairs and improvements, keep these money-saving tips in mind. Here are five simple life hacks to help you throughout your entire home and trying one just might make you $40,000 richer!

Amp up your

shower power

For many people, the morning shower is one of the few moments of peace during the day. Unfortunately, shower heads gradually lose their pressure causing more frustration than relaxation. But that doesn’t mean you need to spend money on a plumber or a replacement. The showerhead could be clogged with mineral deposits. Simply unscrew it and soak it in a bowl of vinegar overnight and scrub with a grout brush in the morning.

Double your storage space

As the sun begins to shine more and polar vortexes become distant memories, you’re probably eager to put your bulky winter coats away. If you’ve discovered that your closets are a bit too small to store your coats and winter clothing, it’s not time for a renovation. Instead, try snapping the tabs off soda cans and putting one over the top of each hanger. The dangling tabs provide slots from which you can hang additional hangers to double the amount of clothing you can store.

Tend to your tile

If you notice a tile is loose, broken or missing on your kitchen backsplash or your bathroom floor and you don’t feel like wasting money on a bag of cement, there’s a tiny, mighty hero that can save the day. Just reach in your drawer full of handy must-haves and grab a tube of Krazy Glue. Apply a few drops of Maximum Bond No-Run Gel to the back of the tile and press it in place for 30 seconds. Apply grout to seal the edges and protect the area from moisture and your surface will look as good as new. If the tile happened to break when it fell from your backsplash, Krazy Glue’s Extended Precision Tip can bond the pieces together for an instant fix.

Remove the rust

If you’re thinking about splurging on new patio furniture this summer, try this incredible trick to remove the rust without spending a penny. Create a paste with two tablespoons of lemon or lime juice and six tablespoons of salt. Dab a dry cloth in the mixture and wipe rust off almost any metal objects, from your patio set to sports equipment to your tools.

Primp your planters

With the arrival of sunnier days, you may be discovering that your planters took a beating during the winter. Instead of buying expensive replacements, create a trendy one with a few supplies available at your local hardware retailer. Blogger and designer, KariAnne Wood of Thistlewood Farms created a trendy, new planter using standard wood trim you can buy at a hardware retailer for a couple dollars. You’ll need three 8 foot lengths of 3/4 inch square wood trim and four feet of 1 x 2 inch pine wood boards. Ask the store to custom-cut six 24 inch pieces and six 9 inch pieces of square trim for the sides of the planter, and two 22 1/2 inch length pieces of pine board for the planter’s base.

Lay the two pine boards flat and place two of the 9 inch trim sections perpendicular to the boards to form a rectangle. Leave approximately an inch of trim hanging over the boards at the corners. Stack the rest of the pieces like building blocks, alternating between two 9 inch pieces and two 24 inch pieces. Use Krazy Glue to bond the pieces at the corners instantly. Wrap jute twine around the corners of the box and glue the ends down. Place three 7 to 8 inch diameter galvanized pail planters inside it for a very on-trend mixed materials look or just use it to hide those flimsy, plastic planters you have lying around.
