It all started with a 19 cent banana split.
One lucky Sunday Pat Ashman’s dad spun the banana split wheel at the old Penguin Ice Cream parlor on Lander Avenue in Turlock and won a banana split for 19 cents and Pat never forgot that childhood memory. Fast forward 20 years later, and she is offering that same experience to the children of Turlock at Lulu’s Ice Cream Parlor and Treatery which serves milkshakes in any flavor that customers desire.
“It’s that memory of that 19-cent banana split, I’ll never forget that. That’s what we’re trying to recreate,” said Ashman.
This coming March will mark the third year that Lulu’s has been a staple of the Canal Drive shopping center which is the only ice cream parlor in the area. While Penguin Ice Cream also had a parlor in the same shopping center that has since closed, Ashman and her partner hatched the idea to bring back that memory of after school ice cream cones that so many in adults in the area so fondly remember.
“I think we really fill a need here,” said Ashman. “Grandparents bring their kids here for an ice cream, we’ve got little league families, gymnastics kids, the after school crowd. It’s really a little bit of everything.”
Fries and shakes are a typical pairing at Lulu’s where customers can order from a variety of flavors including birthday cake, mint, strawberry, chocolate, vanilla and seasonal flavors of pumpkin, peppermint and cotton candy during the summer. While milkshakes may come to mind as a cool treat on a summer day, Lulu’s is busy year round. With a full menu of burgers, sandwiches, salads and more, the store welcomes a lunch rush of teachers from the nearby schools as well as prepares for the daily after school rush when school is in session. Along with featuring their own banana split wheel on Monday’s, Lulu’s also offers birthday party arrangements where kids can build their own Sunday.
“We’re busy all the time. During the summer it is all day but we also have a consistent lunch time crowd and after school rush. Our environment is very kids friendly,” said Kim Bixel, Manager at Lulu’s.
