Modesto Mecca for thrift shops

One… two … three… Drive down McHenry Avenue in Modesto and you will lose count trying to keep track of the number of thrift shops that line the street. As a recent addition to the McHenry thrift scene, Endless Possibilities Thrift Store is expanding its presence in Modesto.

“If you look around, this is thrift store row. We had to have a presence here,” said Rob Staples, thrift store program coordinator at Endless Possibilities.

Endless Possibilities started in downtown Modesto at the intersection of 8th and L streets and recently expanded to its second location at 3124 McHenry Ave. in May 2013. The stores offer the same goods, including kitchen and house wares, furniture, appliances, toys and clothing for men, children and women, which are their most popular items, but also greatly needed.

“We try to offer current and collectable items. With eBay it is hard to find those treasures, but if it is sellable, we will take it,” said Staples.

Staples credits Endless Possibilities’ generous donors and reliable volunteers for making the stores’ operation possible. However, Endless Possibilities’ reach far exceeds that of its two stores as it is owned and operated by the Society for Handicapped Children and Adults, a nonprofit that aims to enhance the lives and self-sufficiency of adults and children with disabilities. Endless Possibilities works to carry out the society’s mission by providing job training for those with disabilities at their stores, as well as organizing and sustaining programs such as a Special Needs Prom Day.

“In addition to our job training and Welfare to Work program, which allows those on welfare to gain work experience at our stores, we also operate the largest medical equipment loan closet in the area for those who cannot afford equipment such as wheelchairs and walkers,” said Staples.

Those interested in donating to Endless Possibilities can take their goods to either location, 3124 McHenry Ave., Suite A or 1129 8th Street, Suite 100, Monday and Saturday. All donations are tax deductible and should be gently used or worn. Those interested in volunteering can pick up a volunteer application at either store.
