Turlock offers pair of weekly farmers markets

Those seeking fresh fruits and vegetables and artisan made products in the Turlock area have two opportunities to enjoy a farmers’ market experience — one on Saturday mornings and a new Thursday night market held in Downtown Turlock.
The Turlock Certified Farmers Market opened for its eighth consecutive season on April 22. The market will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays through Oct. 14 at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds. This will be TCFM’s second year at the fairgrounds. The previous six years, the market was located in downtown Turlock.
“It’s the first season in a long time that we’ve stayed in the same place, location and time. We’re looking forward to doing some more unique events than we have in the past,” said TCFM Board President Brandon Follett.
All of the market’s regular vendors will be returning this year and at least six new ones will be joining the market lineup, that made for over 55 on opening day.
Along with the dozens of returning vendors, this year the market also includes a new organic farm, Guzman and Sons Produce out of Atwater, along with vendors offering precut and packaged chicken and reclaimed and refinished furniture.
Specific market days will also feature live music, cooking demonstrations and a variety of kid-friendly attractions such as the Resendiz Fruit Barn Kiddie Train, a face painter, balloon twister and storytime corner.

The new Central Park Evening Market in Downtown Turlock opened May 4 in Central Park at the corner of East Main Street and Golden State Boulevard. The market’s operating hours are from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. every Thursday from May through the end of September.
The Central Park Evening Market is the City’s contracted market for downtown Turlock and will include an event within the market called “Experience Turlock.” Downtown businesses are extending their business hours to accommodate the market shoppers.  Wristbands for “Experience Turlock” are sold weekly for $5 each and offer patrons exclusive specials and discounts with each participating downtown business during the market hours.   All proceeds from the wristband sales will be donated to a featured non-profit.
The downtown market features over 30 vendors, all from a 20 to 30-mile radius. Those vendors include Alldrin Almonds, Annabella’s Olive Oil, Golden Comb Honey, Frost Bakery, Hummus Heaven, Shelby’s Dog Treats and Whiskfully Sweet, to name a few.
The market also has a kids activity station with arts and crafts and live music.
Local jewelry maker Valeria Jimenez is the new downtown farmers market operator and promoter, and is excited to bring back an old tradition to Turlock’s downtown.
“This is about celebrating downtown,” said Jimenez. “I’m excited to see the restoration, excited to see people coming back downtown on Thursday nights.”
