Sylvia Mundt got her start as a first-grade teacher for Ripon Unified.
That was 41 years ago.
On Monday, she was among the 13 retiring teachers recognized at RUSD school board meeting.
“I’ve always loved teaching and I loved working for this school district,” said Mundt, who spent the past three years at Harvest High.
It was there she helped develop RUSD’s alternative education program under the direction of Principal Sergei Samborski.
“She’ll be missed greatly,” he said.
Prior to Harvest High, Mundt was involved in various alternative education programs in the district, including the Community Day School and Independent Studies.
She also taught eighth grade at Ripona Elementary School.
Mundt won’t be too far away from education scene during retirement.
“My granddaughter attends school (in Ripon Unified). So I’m looking forward to more volunteer work,” she said.
The other teachers recognized at the meeting were Chuck Carley (37 years), Byron Yerzy (36 years), Garry Messick (32 years), Debra Newburg (30 years), Don Voortman (29 years), Carol Niblett (29 years), Terri Beam (21 years), Lois Jones (20 years), Susan Kirk (19 years), Steve Rice (18 years), Butch Perry (18 years), and Pete Miedzinski (12 years).
“They have 342 years of service when combined all together,” board President Kit Oase added.
