The office of postmaster for Manteca is not very attractive, judging from the civil service examination held last Wednesday to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mrs. Dryden. Only three persons presented themselves at Modesto and wrote the examination.

A change in the system of parking automobiles on Yosemite Avenue and Main Street is being made this week under the supervision of Street Superintendent C. C. Hitchcock. The new lines are more nearly parallel with the curb and will provide more space in the streets for automobile traffic.

The beautiful little park at the southeast corner of Sycamore Avenue and Center Street will be known to future generations of Mantecans as “Wilson Park”, in memory of the late Joseph A. Wilson, who died last August. Mr. Wilson served as postmaster of this city for eight years and was a member of the Chamber of Commerce committee appointed to handle the selection of a site for a new post office.

A major street improvement program, to include not only city streets, but those for possible future sub-divisions, was discussed by the City Planning Commission at a meeting Tuesday night. Howard Bissell, consultant for the commission, exhibited maps showing areas adjacent to the city which might be sub-divided at some future time and stated that streets for those areas should be laid out to conform to present city streets.

Plans to Christmas-light the main intersection were dashed recently when the State Highway Department refused permission because of the Stop and Go signals at the intersection. Members of the Merchants Committee of the Chamber of Commerce then decided to light the west entrance to the city, which will be done the first week after Thanksgiving.

The question of whether parent or school should decide what is proper dress for students has been answered at Manteca High School for the next two months at least, by placing responsibility largely in the hands of the parents. Acting on a directive from the district office that board policy on student dress “be given a more liberal interpretation”, principal James Adair announced that the school will relax its dress code on a trial basis.

With the filing period less than two months away, only two men have announced plans to run for the positions of Manteca’s first elected mayor and for a council seat. Steve Kelly, 29, manager of a convenience store, announced last month that he would run for mayor and Timothy Hunter, 36, who has served on the Manteca Planning Commission since January, will run for a council seat.

Manteca Unified School District students have among the highest California Assessment Program (CAP) test scores in San Joaquin County and are performing much higher than the overall state average, according to figures recently released by the State Board of Education. The third-, sixth- and eighth-grade reading scores placed second only behind Ripon Unified School District, and also ranked in the state’s top 60th percentile of all scores.

Upwards of 2,000 people making pledges and bidding on auction items helped the Boys & Girls Club raise in excess of $115,000 during the 20th annual telethon. “It wouldn’t have been possible without the more than 350 volunteers working down here (at the club) Monday and Tuesday,” said Boys and Girls Club Executive Director Chuck Crutchfield. “They are the ones that make it work and so are the people that continue to support the club.”
