The Firemen report everything ready for the big rodeo which will start next Friday morning. A big force of men went to work Wednesday morning to finish the fence which surrounds the park. The grandstand is practically complete. The lot of horses which will be used in the races are here and are being put in good condition for the bucking contests and the races. Lucky McFall, manager of the sports, says there will be a fine program and that a lot of splendid riders have entered for the contest.

Between 35 and 40 head of livestock, which have been donated to the F.D.E.S.M, local Portuguese society sponsoring the annual Pentecostal celebration in this city next Saturday and Sunday, will be auctioned off this afternoon at 2 o'clock, it is announced by A. B. Silva, president. The auction will be held at the grounds owned by the society on Grant Avenue.

The contest for queen of the Holy Ghost celebration on July 1 and 2, conducted by the F.E.S.M., was closed Tuesday night and the winner was announced as Miss Marie Souza, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Souza of Turlock. Her maids of honor will be Miss Margaret Fernandes of Roberts Island and Miss Josephine Berberia of Hanford.

Work got under way Monday on a new 23x22 foot addition to the Bank of America building and the contractor estimates that it will take five months to complete the project. The building permit calls for the expenditure of $30,000 on the new addition and the remodeling of the interior of the present structure. The estimate does not include the new fixtures that are to be installed.

The high school honor roll for the last semester of the 1958-59 school year shows that nine students had straight A's and were accorded "Highest Honors". They were JoAnn Costa, Phyllis Ganes, Johnny Holbrook, Albert Lowe, Jackson Parham, Lyle Patton, Karen Skibinski, Connie Villareal and Barbara Wettack.

A program of activities for the afternoon and evening of Manteca's annual Fourth of July Celebration was given by Charles (Chuck) Shaefer, general chairman for the event, at the Monday luncheon meeting of the special events committee of the Manteca District Chamber of Commerce. Shaefer reported that 24 booths and concessions are currently reserved by local organization, club and church groups to be lined up behind the east bleachers of Schmiedt Field in Lincoln Park.

While countless San Joaquin produce shippers scramble to find trucks and rail cars to haul perishables to market, Manteca farm interests are not immediately burdened by current strikes and violence by independent truckers, according to a recent Bulletin survey. "I have not directly heard or seen any effects of the truckers' strike in this immediate area," said Everett Conway, secretary for the San Joaquin Farm Bureau. "But there is no telling when serious problems may develop," he added.

Lathrop attorneys failed to block discussion about Manteca annexation as an alternative to incorporation and were denied their request to call witnesses during a two and one-half hour hearing in Stockton Superior Court Friday on the City of Manteca's lawsuit against the Local Agency Formation Committee. Contra Costa Judge Robert J. Laney told litigants he would allow only a written record of San Joaquin's LAFCO decision to allow Lathrop to pursue cityhood.

Winds bring fears that "dirt storms" plaguing homes between Union Road and Airport Way will return. The storms sweep across two new subdivisions--Westbrook Estates and Villa Ticino--where the land has been stripped and graded, exposing the sandy loam while builders wait for precious sewer allocations in order to start actual construction of homes.  A steady stream of residents who have been battling dirt storms since Easter paraded before the City Council during a special meeting Monday for over two hours recounting the daily horror of living with a modern-day version of the 1930's Dust Bowl. More than 120 residents attended the meeting.
