It represents an investment of $30,000 and will open next Wednesday morning.  This is the Manteca French Bakery, situated at 123 West Yosemite Avenue. This is perhaps the best-equipped bakery outside of the large cities in the San Joaquin Valley where they are larger but no better equipped.

January 28, 1932

Committees of the year were appointed by C. P. Button, president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce of San Joaquin County at a meeting in Escalon Monday night. Among those named were Guss Schmiedt of Manteca, chairman of the puncture vine committee, E. C. Woodruff, member of the countywide road committee and C. W. Forbes, member of the appropriations committee. Manteca was represented by E. E. Douglass and R. E. Leventon.

January 28, 1942

Included in the list of young men soon to leave for induction centers for military training under the Selective Service Act are the following from Manteca: Cedric Cederwall, Garrit Teunnissen, William Dadasovich, Frank Ramos, Nick Cortese and Frank Dickman. Another Manteca boy to enlist in his country’s service is Ernest Wilson, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Wilson. He was accepted into the Army/Air corps as a cadet last week and left Friday morning for a training field in Arizona.

January 24, 1952

Aspirants for the job of Chief of Police of Manteca have until April 1 to submit their qualifications. This was the deadline set on Monday night by the city council as it authorized placing advertisements for chief in various police and government publications. The successful applicant will go to work on May 1 and will take over as head of the police department when Tom Brockman retires July 1.

January 25, 1962

Many Manteca residents were surprised Sunday morning as they awoke to a virtual “winter wonderland” following this city’s first real snowfall since 1932. Although there were some reports of a light snowfall in 1950, this marked the first time in 30 years that local youngsters had a chance to frolic in the snow. As in many local areas the snow lasted until Monday morning.

January 28, 1972

Manteca Unified School District voters Tuesday said “No” to a $3.88 million bond issue and “Yes” to the recall of trusteesBetty Ruble and Alex Hildebrand. Voters also elected John Peters, 37-year-old communications technician for the California Division of Highways, to the Manteca chair of Mrs. Ruble and Joseph A. Hoffman, 40, insurance agent and farmer to the Nile Garden chair of Hildebrand. The election had a 41.7 percent turnout.

January 26, 1982

Rumor became harsh reality for workers at the Libbey-Owens-Ford plant when company and union officials announced last Friday the largest layoff ever at the Lathrop glass manufacturing plant. Members of the United Glass and Ceramic Workers of North America’s Local 418 were informed at a meeting that 363 LOF employees would be receiving indefinite layoff notices by February 5.

January 29, 1992

Manteca Unified School District trustees voted Tuesday to keep high school bus routes previously marked for elimination. In a unanimous decision, the board moved to keep routes serving some 140 Manteca High and East Union High students until the end of the year. They also approved the formation of a board-appointed committee of parents and school officials to address parent concerns.

Manteca’s growth has kicked it up four notches in the ranking of California’s largest cities. The state Department of Finance pegged Manteca’s population at 51,924 as of April 1 in 2001, compared to the U. S. Census Bureau figure of 49,494 12 months earlier. The 2000 population placed Manteca as the 148th largest Golden State city. The 2001 figures place Manteca at the 144th spot.
