Firefighters from two departments responded to a 911 call that smoke was rolling off the roof above a second story apartment Friday night and kept the blaze from spreading to three adjacent living units.

Jennifer Tenorio said she saw the smoke coming from the building in the 1300 block of McNary Circle as she was talking with a friend at about 8:30 in front of her residence across the street and called 911.  She first found it hard to believe that smoke was actually coming from the building and that it was on fire.  She said her good friends live just next door to the apartment that was on fire.

Manteca city firemen and members of the Lathrop-Manteca Fire Department worked together to secure the apartment before discarding burned furniture out the front windows of the building as neighbors stood in their front yards and watched the scenario unfold.

Firemen called for a city engineer to check the apartment complex for possible structural damage.  It was believed the fire may have originated in a couch.  One Manteca businessman who lives several blocks to the north of the apartments said he heard a loud boom followed shortly by the sound of fire sirens.

There was nothing discovered initially that would have supported that claim of an explosion.
