It is win-or-stay-home time.
Northgate came out of the consolation bracket Tuesday night and stunned Spreckels Park 8-3, setting up a winner-take-all contest tonight for the championship of the District 67 Juniors All-Star Tournament at Agostini Field.
The first five batters reached base and scored, and Northgate never looked back. Charlie Sanders (2 for 4, RBI, run) started the five-run parade with a single, and Jacob Toste reached on a sun-aided hit on an outfield flyball. Evan Jeffery (2 for 3, RBI) singled in Sanders, Toste scored on a wild pitch, Austin Orr singled in Jeffery, Marcus Brennan walked and Zach McCasland singled in both Orr and Brennan.
In the third inning Orr walked, stole second, took third on Brennan’s single and came home on a wild pitch. Brennan stole second, took third on the wild pitch that Brennan scored on and scored on a groundout by Anthony Enos for a 7-1 Northgate lead. Ryan Vanarsdell singled in the sixth inning and scored on a Sanders single to make the score 8-2.
Jeffery went the distance on the hill for Northgate, allowing just three hits going into the sixth inning and ended up giving up six hits while striking out three.
Spreckels Park’s Zach Fonseca (2 for 3, double, run) doubled in the second inning and scored on a hard-hit single to right to draw within 5-1. Jakob Lopez (double, run) doubled in the fifth and scored when the throw to first on Fonseca’s infield single was off the mark to make the score 7-2.
Nolan Bagley drew a two-out walk in the seventh inning, took third on Blake Fonseca’s double and scored on a wild pitch for the last run of the game.
The championship game begins this afternoon at 5:30.
