Black smoke coming from a detached shed behind an abandoned home in the 100 block of Oak Street could be seen two miles away on the north side of Manteca.
Manteca Police Detective Sergeant Danny Erb spotted the blaze near an alley that runs behind the shuttered residence and called firemen to the scene. Units from Manteca as well as from the Lathrop-Manteca Fire Department responded to the scene.
It was just within the last 10 days that firemen extinguished a fire in a shed near the same location.
Manteca patrolman Randy Chiek called the fire suspicious in nature in a neighborhood that has had numerous possible arson blazes during the last year. Neighbors gathered in the alley to watch the fire along with a young couple who watched it from their nearby roof top.
Manteca gang unit officer Jason Hensley and his police chaplain wife Heidi were on special assignment when they came upon the fire seeing the heavy black smoke. They had been delivering Thanksgiving dinner boxes to families in need at the time.
