April showers bring smiles

In the classic movie, Gene Kelly was singing in the rain. In Manteca and Lathrop Thursday, people were smiling and playing in the April showers.

Brandi Din, 11, and her brother Christopher Potter, 7, took their sibling rivalry out into the open and challenged each other in a friendly tennis game at the tennis court on West Center Street across from the library. The Joshua Cowell School students took advantage of their Easter break, or spring break as others prefer to call it, to hone their skills in the game.

Hoodies were the order of the day for many who were out running various errands in downtown Manteca. But Pat Gobel joined the handful of human traffic on Maple Street who opted for the protection of an umbrella. Colorful umbrellas were also deployed by employees and volunteers at the Lathrop Senior Center as they escorted guests into the waiting buses for the ride home. Nearby, at the interactive water play area near the Veterans Memorial Monument, Lathrop Parks Maintenance Director Sal Graziano, Parks Project Manager Nathan Houx and senior parks maintenance Lily Liu donned raincoats to ward off the rain.

Thursday’s April showers are expected to taper off today with this morning’s chance of rain showers turning into just a slight chance of rain showers later in the day, according to the National Weather Service forecast. You can leave home without the umbrella on Saturday and Easter Sunday, and up through Thursday next week when spring’s sunny skies are predicted to return.
