Mike Morowit is wasting no time.

The owner of Miner Mart Liquors pulled his nomination papers on Monday, the first day of filing for the Manteca City Council race this November.

Morowit currently serves on the Manteca Planning Commission and the Public Safety Sales Tax Oversight Committee where he acts as a “fiscal watchdog” for Manteca taxpayers.

There is a guarantee of at least one new face being on the City Council this year as long-time incumbent John Harris is not running for one of two open seats. The other incumbent — Vince Hernandez — has indicated he is running. So far, Richard Silverman is the only other council hopeful to form a campaign committee.

Councilman Steve DeBrum is seeking the mayor’s post being vacated by Willie Weatherford as is retired Manteca city planner Ben Cantu. DeBrum is only halfway through a four-year term. Should he lose, he would still serve on the council.
