Mike Morowit is not running away from who he is.

Several folks have advised him not to mention that he owns a liquor store in campaign literature by leaving off the name of his store on the belief that it will cost him votes in his effort to secure a seat on the Manteca City Council this November.

Morowit would hear nothing of it.

He’s proud of the fact for the past 20 years that he has owned Miner Mart on East Yosemite Avenue. Morowit says he will mention  that he owns Miner Mart — the name of his business — although he won’t specifically mention what he sells. With Minor Mart’s nearly 40 years of history in Manteca most folks know that it’s a liquor store.

Of course he can say he’s a businessman on the ballot but it would be refreshing if he said he was a store owner. As he noted, lots of people can claim they are businessmen if they work for someone else or even if they sell items on the side for extra money. But making a living owning and operating a retail store is much rarer.

Morowit is having the first post-filing campaign fundraiser of all of the council candidates on Thursday, Aug. 14, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Emory Hall, 1028 W. Yosemite Ave., The cost is $50. For details, email morowitmike@yahoo.com.
