The 82nd annual Festa do Espirito Santo de Manteca wasn’t the only Portuguese Holy Ghost celebration in Northern California.

Monterey’s70th annual Festa do Divino Espirito Santo took place Sunday as well. This year’s senior queen for the Monterey celebration is Logan Jackson of Manteca.

Logan’s great-grandmother Marie Gulart, was an original founder of the Monterey festa. Portuguese communities throughout California sent queens, their side maids and other representatives in traditional dress to participate. A Mass was held and the traditional meal of “sopas” was offered following the parade. The Holy Ghost celebration honors Queen Isabel of Portugal (1271 to 1336) who embodied the Holy Spirit through her work with the poor.
