Unlicensed drivers help pay for new police equipment

Unlicensed drivers whose vehicles have been towed, impounded and releases since 2009 are helping pay to make the Manteca Police Department’s traffic enforcement efforts more efficient.

A $25 administrative tow fee that the city imposed on each vehicle that was released has generated $24,655 so far or the equivalent of 986 towed vehicles.

The City Council is expected to tap into those fees Tuesday to purchase three electronic citation writers, printers and supplies costing $9,600.

They will replace three units currently used by the traffic enforcement unit to improve their efficiency and productivity.
