Wakeboard competition across I-5 from first Baconfest

The epicenter for fun in the 209 this weekend might just be the Manthey Road exit on Interstate 5 in Lathrop.
Not only is the first ever Baconfest taking place at Dell’Osso Farms but the Wake Shredder Throwdown that is part of the World Series of Wakeboarding is also this weekend across the freeway at the Mossdale Quarry Lakes.
On Friday workers at Dell’Osso Farms got a tantalizing whiff of one of the bacon creations that will be available — cooked bacon that had been soaked on bourbon. It is just one of the many unique things in store for those who venture out to the farm this weekend.
This year’s event promises has an abundance of unique offerings. It may have been even kore so as Ron and Susan Dell’Osso tried — and almost landed  two fairly obvious celebrities to tie into the event that couldn’t be secured due to scheduling issues. They were Kevin Bacon  to join celebrity chef and TV star Guy Fieri as well as Miss Piggy of Muppet fame to serve as a judge.
There is a possibility they could be part of Baconfest II.
Another obvious event — an old-fashioned grease pig race — was a non-starter due to concerns that came up from people who thought they were going to waste food when they wanted to add a pile of tomatoes as a unique obstacle for the Mud on the Farm obstacle run that lures over 4,000 each year to Dell’Osso Farms.
The objection was misplaced. They wanted to give competitors and chance for a squishy challenge by using tomatoes that are left in the field due to their size and other issues that make them not usable for food products or to eat. They are typically plowed under. The plan was to collect them and create a tomato pit.
They figured a greased pig contest would trigger similar objections.
