The Commons at Union Ranch offers regular arthritis exercise session for their residents as well as for anyone in the community who would like to participate in the twice-weekly activity.

The members of the retirement community on North Union Road say the exercises do help them to be able to function better in their daily lives.

Jane Brown said that she really enjoys the program.  “It helps me relax and if I miss a class I really pay for it the next day.”

Cecilia O’Rourke added, “I came here using a walker.  After seven months of classes I have progressed to a cane.  If I don’t go for a couple of days I really stiffen up.”

There are often 12 to 15 on average class and as many as 20 take part at the Modesto facility where they make use of classical music with a slow tempo as a guide to the exercises.

Premiera Care nurse for the Commons facilities, Linda Hughes, said that arthritis is a combination of 120 different diseases.  Exercise is so important because it aids in balance, stability supporting the ability for people to button a jacket and tie their shoes when their joints are tightened by arthritis.

Hughes said the exercise series is supported through the Arthritis Association that provides a website that explains the results of their suggested exercises following lengthy studies of the participants.
